On the "Quickly Kevin, Will He Score?" podcast there is a two-part interview with Carlton Palmer about his career, if anyone's interested. Unfortunately, there was so much material that they didn't get as far as his time with County but it's still pretty interesting and entertaining. Dave Jones gets a respectful mention from his Southampton days.

Been looking forward to this for a while. It's 90s themed though, so that'll be why it didn't cover his time with us. He was on Undr The Cosh recently too, but I think it's only available to paid subscribers.
For anyone who hasn't listened to Quickly Kevin, it's probably one of the best football podcasts out there. They're six series in now, so there are plenty of episodes that are worth seeking out. The episode where they dissect the Doncaster documentary 'They Think It's All Rovers' has a fair bit of County-related content in it too IIRC, what with Danny being their manager at the time.

Good point about it not straying out of the '90s. It's a brilliant podcast. I love when they break down football films ad books, especially when they are bad ones. Some of the best episodes are when they critique the books (with Ivo Graham as guest "critic") supposedly written by Steve Bruce - "Striker!", "Sweeper!" and "Defender!" Really funny stuff. And there are some cracking interviews. For example, I listened to the Dave Beasant episode recently, which was excellent, and to Gary Neville a good while ago - like him or hate him he was dead funny and insightful.

The Undr the Cosh one is good. I'm a bit sick of them in general now, but they've done some good ones which are County related.
Aaron Wilbraham is excellent.
Going back to Palmer though he does a very good job of selling his time with us as a success and goes in hard on BK and Co. Which is nice.

It made me reflect on Carlton's time he picked up some good players. Lambert (although he played him out of position in centre mid but to be fair to carlton so did sammy mac - who I thought was awful with the backing he had) Beckett Ellison Rob Jones John hardiker Goodwin Brad Jones (although he was awful for us) The Scottish chap who scored wycombe away Were all good signings who either had a good time with us or went on to have decent football careers Lescott Challinor Pemberton Burgess Weren't up to scratch imho. I listened to the albie podcast and I was surprised how popular carlton was among the players. To be fair I didn't rate carlton, but I agree he gave a good defence in that podcast.

Quickly Kevin is f*cking brilliant. It's a lesson in how to talk about football in a comedic fashion without it turning into the kind of "top top bantz" you get on Soccer Saturday.
The guests they get on are brilliant. The episode they did with Frank Skinner at the start of Season Two was a particular favourite of mine.

Here’s the Undr The Cosh one Fallowfield. I don’t buy a lot of what he’s selling here about his time with the club. That side wasn’t getting promoted in two years with him in charge Kennedy coming in or not.

Sent an email to the quickly Kevin boys the other week when they were talking about Adie Mike.
Wanted to share the time I saw him stark bollock naked on a soccer schools tour as a 11/12 year old.
Alas they haven’t shared it haha

Undr the Cosh have just done a Kevin Ellison one. Not sure when it goes out to non-patreons but hopefully it'll be decent.

I spoke with Rickie Lambert a couple of years ago and he said that most of that squad were told to sign on reduced terms or they were going. That was about October 2004, so after we’d had a poor start and he’d presumably spat his dummy. Lambert spoke about his in similar terms as Palmer does. De Vos too. He said De Vos was the one he couldn’t stand. I think the only player of any quality who we sold that season who stayed beyond Christmas was Feeney. Beckett, Lambert, Bridge-Wilkinson, Welsh were all gone. I know we kept Ash Williams but he was poor for us that season, nobody would have thought he’d have gone on to do what he has.

Oh the Kennedy stuff I don’t doubt either, I also agree with the stuff he says about football these days demands instant results and doesn’t allow teams to be built over time. But I also feel he’s deluded about his own ability as a manager.

<snip> But I also feel he’s deluded about his own ability as a manager. That's probably true. But I like him, and not only for his slick moves that started off *that* John Hardiker goal. : )

The guests they get on are brilliant. The episode they did with Frank Skinner at the start of Season Two was a particular favourite of mine. When Frank confirmed that, yes, Bobby Gould signed the wrong Paul Williams. We'd recorded, but not edited, a Tea Party podcast with a much fuller version of that story, told by Phil Brennan, and including an account of Stuart Pearson's role in it. He got the story from the horse's mouth when on Soccer AM with Gould. Literally in between us recording and releasing our podcast, Simply Kevin released theirs and gazumped us.

Only gone 12 minutes into that clip, and it kept annoying me how he was getting things wrong and they were lapping it up. Stopped to do some quick fact checking.
Nowhere near - I checked the table from that day on enfa.co.uk and it has Watford down in 14th.
This one's closer, they were 4th
No it was only six adrift after that match. As we played on a Thursday I thought he might've meant after the other teams had caught up with their game in hand, but no, we were 7 adrift after the weekend's matches.
I should probably give a bit of leeway here, as getting dicked so often makes a lot of the games and opponents that season all blur into one, but Burnley wasn't a shellacking (2-3) and the only 6-0 was when we didn't have a manager.
But it is!
Not looked this one up but we stayed up, so must've been higher
The first two had played under Kilner, and Alby made his debut in 97/98 so this was his 5th season in the first team! He then went on to claim credit for bringing in Jon Daly, who made his debut two years earlier.
Well, I mean, I've already spent too long analyzing these claims, I'm surely not sick enough to wikipedia the dates of births of our 2003/04 squad.... safe to say it will have had a few players in it who were that age, and maybe even 18, but they would be the youngest ones in it, most of the squad were at various ages in their 20s and Palmer should include himself in the average given how much he played. It was a pretty young squad but like everything, he's exaggerating. The problem with that is his main point here is about people's perceptions and how they differ from what the bare facts tell you, but he is getting every fact wrong to alter the perception of himself!
