Take those Stokies for every penny you can if I ever did see a poor bookie I'd like it to be them.

and then back down 2 leagues to NLN, and then got promoted back to NL... yet is still a L2 player. Been a proper yoyo few years for him. He didn't do that bit did he? At least not with County. I meant he promoted to league 2 with Salford and then dropped down to NLN to rejoin us on loan, where got promoted and is still a league 2 player because he is still with Salford.

Just saw that. What’s going on there? Not good enough, I suspect. He had spells of being superb for us last season, but that was in a largely average regional league. I’m not really surprised he’s not set L2 alight. Don’t blame him for taking the move, I’d have done exactly the same but he’s not good enough for the league. I wouldn’t have him back, given our ambitions. He was our standout player in our promotion side, he's easily good enough for this level.

But we'll be looking for players that are not just good enough for this level, but good enough to go up and challenge for promotion/playoffs at the next level. Warby couldn't get into a Northampton team that struggled into the playoffs, were in dreadful form, and probably would have finished about 10th had the season been concluded. His level would appear to be about 12th-17th in League 2. We'll be looking for players whose level can be more 1st-8th in League 2.

He could be involved in the first part of the journey, he could help get us back into the league before becoming a bit part player in league 2 and then moving on, then again he might grow with us.

Warby was great for us, but once teams identified him as our main threat and doubled up on him he lost some of his influence. Jim even left him out for spells. I really like him but agree that we will be looking for an upgrade on him.

If he had better players around him, opponents couldn't afford to double up on him, however I don't think he'll be back I'm just making the case for him being good enough.

You're right Vicar. If he wasn't the main threat he could still do a job, but still think we will be looking for better. Not sure I'm a fan of always looking to bring back players who have played for us before. There are loads out there and Jim's radar will be buzzing.

I’d have Warburton back no question.
We only had him part time remember so a full time Warby playing behind the main striker would do for me.
He’s a goal scorer and they are hard to find.

Northampton have had him FT for a season and he’s scored one league goal all and can’t even get on their nine-man bench. He’s not at an age where he is going to improve either.

I agree with vicar on this. I think us saying we don’t want players from L2 at the moment is trying to run before we know how to walk. Northampton are a good League 2 side. We’re a good National League side. Before we become a good League 2 side ourselves, we need to be a great side at the level we’re at. We’re not there yet. We’ve all commented on what great pedigree the players we’ve taken from Salford have, because they do for our level. But even Salford aren’t a great League 2 side. It’s going to take us time to become what we want to be, and that organic growth is the fun part. While the temptation is to try to assemble a side already good enough for one or two levels above, it’ll be a great journey to see players grow with us.

The ideal for me would find;
GOOD PLAYERS that make a GREAT TEAM
rather than
GREAT PLAYERS that make a GOOD TEAM

He’s at a L2 club but hasn’t done anything at all to say he’s good enough for that level, and he’s untested at our level. Possibly have him back on a year with the option of a second if he excelled but that’d be it for me. I wouldn’t be rushing out to get him.

It’s hard to judge whether Warburton would be a good signing until we see who else comes in.
If we’re going for it big and signing Danny Lloyd type players who won’t come cheap then you’d probably give Warby a miss but he might just be the type of player Jim is looking for.
