I don’t think it’s so much living rough ‘by choice’ as unable to live in a ‘normal’ environment due to some combination of mental illness / addiction / alcoholism. True in some or many cases, I'm sure; but there are plenty of people just a couple of paychecks away from homelessness or living in their car, who do not have those issues.

As I understand it, many of the people you refer to are more likely to become ‘hidden homeless‘, spending time staying on a friend’s settee for a few days/ couch surfing etc. rather than sleeping rough. This is particularly the case with homeless women (often fleeing domestic violence) who tend to have better support networks than the stereotypical homeless man on the street. It’s the area where the lack of affordable housing becomes a massive problem. what I don’t know is the relative numbers of people suffering in this way compared to rough sleeping.

I managed a homeless hostel for 2 years, mental health was by far the biggest cause.

Just had a rare visit to Marion's and got into a discussion about freedom of movement, some people still think it only applies to people coming to the UK but things will carry on just as they are for us living and working where we want, people just don't see what they've given away.

Where do you start? Rape, Childhood abuse, Alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, PTSD, some just couldn't keep up at school and continued to fall further behind and ended up with depression, others couldn't handle relationships breaking down, I could go on all day.

Typical 60+ Tory voter mentality, 'I'm all right, Jack', without having the facts to back up their blinkered views.

Not sure that’s a fair representation of the discussion, think there was just one person who suggested (and quite possibly a flippant one) that if people didn’t like it in the U.K. they could “get a one way ticket to Europe”. It does seem that there is an attempt on here to ridicule the other board at every opportunity.

I'm struggling to write this on my mobile on the beach so excuse any typos, I'd never ridicule the other board as I've got friends on there who I wish would come over here but there's still some of the opinion that we'll still have our cake after we've scoffed it.
