To carry on the classy midfielders theme, Chris Marsden joins this week! Who knew he'd just had a son before the promotion?! Goes live this Thursday /

Looking forward to this one, probably my 2nd favourite ever player (after Bill Williams).
The Wycombe game was the most nerve racking I can remember, up there with Carlisle. Didn't feel the same nerves at Chesterfield as we seemed in control of that game, but Wycombe battered us 2nd half but we just hung on. Remember Mazza being knackered 2nd half and it came out after the story about his wife giving birth.
Feel Marsden is a bit underrated from a County perspective, doesn't seem to get the same love as others from that 96/97 team, but for me he was the man that really made us tick.

Probably the best player we've had in my time, excluding George Best.

Wycombe had to win to stop up, but then results had turned in their favour and they didn't lay off! Chris Marsden is the best player I've seen in a county shirt during my time. Talent was immense.

Him & Tom Bennett probably had the best midfield partnership i've witnessed as a County fan, but they were surrounded by players with the ability to pull the opposition out of position & create space for the killer ball...everyone just clicked in that team

As I recall one was to replace the loss of the other and the partnership was a sort of fortunate accident.

I wouldn’t mind some clarity on that because I don’t remember them starting the season together either. Paul Ware started didn’t he?

Not sure of the reasons, but Bennett was signed pre-season 1995/96 and Marsden joined February/March of 1996. 7.0.3

Bennett and Paul Ware started 95/96, Eckhardt was involved along the way and sometimes Michael Oliver from memory. Bennett was injured at Everton away and not long after we signed Marsden (debut at Burnley when nobody knew who it was when he was warming up, pre-internet obvioulsy). First time they played together was Swindon away last game of that season when Bennett came back from injury. They then started 96/97 and were the main pair most of the season bar a few suspensions.

Cheers Gibbo. I was thinking Paul Ware because he scored in that league cup game at Chesterfield at the start of 96/97. I forgot Marsden and Bennett were there the year before even though I was at that Swindon game! Dull 0-0 wasn’t it? They were champions and Jonesy told our players to soak in the celebrations and remember it for next year.

He played at the Dell when Marsden was out. And at the Riverside too - did Bennett miss that one?

Seem to remember Bennett selling 2 Boro players a peach of a dummy on the half way line during that game

My abiding memory of Tom Bennett is England v Scotland Euro 96 and the Jocks were getting a hard time from the English hoolies, I met a bare chested Tom on Euston, he'd taken his Scotland shirt off to avoid trouble but he had tartan shorts on, however there were enough County and Wolves fans to make it safe.
