I interviewed Luther Blissett about this yesterday. He spoke brilliantly.
Incredible to think Leslie was in touching distance of being the first black player for England, more than half a century before Viv Anderson got his first cap.

if he was their biggest football legend then why hasn,t he got a statue there already. just another case for me in following another new crusade.

if he was their biggest football legend then why hasn,t he got a statue there already. just another case for me in following another new crusade. Blissett told me yesterday that even he didn’t know of Jack Leslie’s story until recently. This is a man who was the first black player to score a hat trick for England, and one of the first black players for England full stop. He met Jack in the 80s, when he was at West Brom, and had no idea - Jack was a humble sort of bloke. Now, if even Luther Blissett didn’t know that tale, what does that tell us? These stories matter. You’re right, it is about following a trend: one of making sure we pay tribute to the right kind of people. Also, on your note saying ‘if he’s the most important player, why don’t they already have a statue of him?’ Well, maybe you could point me to our statue of Danny Bergara, or Kevin Francis, or Trevor Porteous? Maybe I’ve just never noticed them.

you have answered my comment in a roundabout way. we have not got statues for these people because the club do not think either they are worthy or statues are not fashionable news till a few weeks ago. if this type of thing carries on there will be more statues around than anciant rome and athens together.

We haven’t got statues because they are extraordinarily expensive.
Which is why Plymouth are crowdfunding...

Rome and Athens show statues could be good for the tourist industry. People can come and look at them as they wander round, taking in the decaying remnants of a long lost empire. Less facetiously, it's a good thing we're thinking about what we put on plinths and what that says about us. It's more complex than the deliberately simplistic approach our PM would like us to take to them.
