From what I’ve read, it’s more complicated than usual because the higher than usual number of postal votes, which means the count will take much longer than usual, particularly in key states. As the US media calls the victor well before they’ve finished counting (very unlike our system where the winners are reported as they happen), there is scope for shenanigans there, particularly given the partisan nature of the US media, and lack of a BBC equivalent. Yes it’s likely we could be in a position where Trump is winning on the night but loses the election once the Mail ins are counted. Anything less than a decisive win for either candidate is probably going to spin the US into a constitutional crisis.

To be honest, if it’s ‘only’ a constitutional crisis, rather than the first inklings of a civil war, that probably counts as a successful election right now.
Watched that Social dilemma thing on Netflix last night, and it’s a real test of the ‘social media allows everyone to believe their own facts’ theory that was being put forward there.
Read an interesting article on five thirty eight earlier saying that a situation like the Bush/Gore election just couldn’t happen now due to the extreme polarisation of US politics since then.

This is exactly why the Postal Service is being undermined, why Trump and his cronies are lying about widespread mail-in fraud (it's not a thing), and why he is screaming about calling the election result on Nov 3 and dismissing any subsequent mailed ballots, so that what might be a close election can get decided in the Supreme Court - the new nominee for which he and the GOP are trying to quickly force through before the election. Edit: the well has been thoroughly poisoned already. And this is on top of widespread gerrymandering, voter suppression and electoral interference. By the way, a BBC equivalent in the US would be NPR but that's radio, not TV. It's like Radio 4.

Trump has been preparing lawsuits for a while. I believe it will be bluster in the end though, he will not stay in the White House that way.

Trump has been preparing lawsuits for a while. I believe it will be bluster in the end though, he will not stay in the White House that way. Assuming 'He won't sink that low' has never proven correct yet Correct. And this feels like far more than bluster. He is desperate because of what might face him outside of the White House, and there are vested interests with leverage over him keen to keep him there. Add to that the dogma of parts of the Senate, House and even (disgracefully) the Dept. of Justice that believes in a conservative oligarchy in perpetuity. (By the way, the Senate elections are just as important, and possibly more so).

Quite amusing and embarrassing report in the Times about ministers now being told to "woo Biden" looks like we had too many eggs in that basket, maybe we'll be a bit less confontational with Brussels now.

He doesn’t get to stay as president just because the election result is disputed.

It's January before the transfer of presidency and the result will be decided well before that, even if it is in the courts. He and the GOP are doing everything they can to steal the vote on the day or shortly after.

Yeah yeah, politics. The biggest story from the USA is that the Rays kicked the Yankees' sorry arses out of the postseason.
(No spoilers for tonight's game, lads - taping it)
