We went to Costco earlier today and was pleasantly surprised how many were wearing masks, though yet again there were a few who seem unable to work out how to wear them properly. Yeah, I've noticed that too..... its blue on the outside!!! That doesn't help.me with my all white ones.

Our town is not a tourist hotspot, it hasn't even got a hotel but the locals do understand the importance of tourism to the economy, they know a balance needs to be struck. could this be seen as the start of a change that could become permanent in terms of tourism both here and abroad. are some areas just become giant theme parks with too much reliance on tourism. even in this country so many towns are areas discribe themselves now as a tourist destination which to me they are not and never have been. on top of this there are a number with big green agendas who would be happy if the vast majority of flights in and out of this country finished tomorrow. this virus plus any mass unemployment in the future has made the tourist industry quite frail with far too much reliance on it. there could be mass redundancies in it, but in a changing world it could happen. it will only be the same as with places who relied on one industry like coal mining, heavy engineering, ship building, steel works etc. etc. think there will be much more sadness for people who are made redundant in tourism than ever there was for the industries i mentioned.

I love England but holidaying here is a non starter, I took my grandchildren to Devon a couple of years ago in the height of summer, it rained almost non stop and cost me a fortune, in Spain or Greece they can play round the pool or on the beach. When you have only a few weeks holiday a year, spending them here could be a complete waste of your precious holidays.

Or stay in playing card games, travel scrabble, board games, etc... Nothing wrong with holidaying here. Plenty do it every year.

My last UK Summer holiday was in Devon the year it rained so hard that part of a nearby village fell into the sea. We were in a static caravan and you couldn't hear yourself speak for the noise of the rain on the roof. Had two of the kids with us who would have been about 12 and 7. We said never again and have been as good as our word.

used to take 3 holidays a year in this country when my lad was growing up. always a week at easter and octber school holiday. then 2 weeks in june/july. yes we had some rain and actually a couple of days early morning snow one easter. actually on the odd day we had rain in summer it never stopped us doing what we wanted as we all were not beach types. the thought of a possible having temperatures over 30 degrees would have been a complete no go for any of us even for a day. sitting on a beach or going into a pool for us were non starters as eating or drinking outside is.

Plenty do it every year. You're not selling it Impy. Maybe not but you were very dismissive. There's loads of people for whom a week in a caravan or cramped B&B is about all their holiday budget will stretch to - no flight to Spain or fortnight all-inclusive in Greece for them. And they manage just fine taking holidays in the UK. Not to mention rugged types who voluntarily go camping and holidays hiking, walking, climbing etc... Holiday is primarily about getting away from your usual life, not having to go to work/school, and spending time with your friends/family - not so much about sun, sea, sand, swimming pools.

You don't need to tell me about poverty, I didn't have a single holiday until I was working and could pay for it myself, that includes camping and caravans, if you go back a few posts I made the point about the cost of UK holidays.

Just because it rains doesn't mean a holiday is wasted though.

That's nothing! During the school holidays we were beaten thrice a day, ate cold gravel and swam in an acid bath each morning. And we were lucky!

A little reductive there. For a lot of people, holidays aren't just about going to sit by a pool / beach somewhere much the same as England, only sunnier, hence backpacking around Vietnam / safari in Tanzania / driving down the California coast etc.
