Reading up on the Macc situation led me to a story about Charlton Athletic. Seems their situation is currently being compared to that of Bury and a real danger apparently that they could end up in the same situation. It seems a takeover of the club by 3 people has been blocked by the EFL, one of the people involved have been identified as a former director of the club and another is a lawyer. Apparently the lawyer is Manchester based and was the lawyer at Bury during their troubles. Said lawyer has also lined up Dave Jones as a football consultant and seemingly Jones has already identified a number of players to be sold off whilst also identifying a number of foreign players as potential replacements. Not sure given the involvement of Jones and the lawyer at Bury whether Jones is now seem as a genuine trouble shooter for clubs in a mess or is he (Knowingly or not) in with a guy who you wouldn’t want near your club.
Ps. Story was in the Sun online but can’t find the link now.

There is 14 days left for the 3 to appeal. The !anchester lawyer is Chris Farnell according to CAFC fan boards. Never heard of him, but if he was involved with Bury then there are no surprises the EFL don’t want him involved.

The lawyer is Chris Farnell of IPS Law, based in Hale. Some Charlton stormed his office last week and Jones was there at the same time! The sun article is here www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12366459/charlton-efl-expulsion-threat-bury-elliott-farnell/But as always, it is not necessarily to be taken as fact. One of the journos there is thought to possibly be a mouthpiece for some of the protagonists involved. The situation is so complex you need a degree in corporate law to understand most of it, but in a nutshell the club is in dire straits, despite still being solvent. The whole club was owned by Belgian Roland Duchatelet from 2014. He sold it to a new company called East Street Investments for £1 in Jan 2020. ESI then agreed to pay him £50m within 6 months for The Valley and training ground. This figure is thought to be over inflated and an attempt by Duchatelet to recoup losses he made employing inexperienced people who made bad decisions during his reign (eg 29 Yr old CEO Katrien Meire who finally left a few years ago, only to go to Sheffield Wednesday and be involved in their FFP irregularity!). The majority shareholder of ESI is an unknown Syrian called Tahnoon Nimer (spelt in a variety of ways) who was thought to be related to the Abu Dhabi Al Nayhan family (same lot as Man City). However, it would appear he has insufficient money and is unable to attract any investors. His whereabouts are currently unknown. He was requested by the EFL to attend a meeting last week, but a message came back that he was in hospital! Duchatelet still owns The Valley and training ground. The other main shareholder is a guy called Matt Southall who was also installed as the chairman in January. He has links to Bolton Wanderers and Bassini. He fell out with Nimer in Feb/Mar, who accused him of stealing money from the club. It turns out that although the club was sold by Duchatelet, it seems the EFL did not ratify it due to lack of proof of funds. It has therefore been under a transfer embargo since January. Bowyer had to play a load of kids for a large part of the season and it was a miracle they were not cut well adrift by the end, even though they ultimately went down (not helped by Lyle Taylor refusing to play, post lock down). Nimer somehow got the police to remove Southall from the club, even though he is a 35% shareholder. Nimer I think then decided to sell ESI to a new group of people, seemingly to get shut of it. The end game of this new group are the current real concern. The 2 public main players are Chris Farnell and Paul Elliot (a property business man from the North West that nobody has ever heard of, but was evidently responsible for closing a school in Derbyshire for the land and assets). A quick Google search will show you Farnell has been involved in a string of distressed clubs (eg. Leeds, Salisbury, Bury). It is thought ESIv2 want to buy the club to then do another flip sale of it, with the figure of £6m being suggested as the fee. The EFL notably failed Farnell and Elliot last week for the Owners and Directors test (I think only about 2 people have ever failed it before them)! However, it is suggested that ESIv2 and co are happy with the delays it takes with the EFL, as they are banking on a buyer being desperate enough to pay the money before time runs out to be entered into the league next season. It is thought Jones (pictured at Gigg Lane towards the end of the Bury debacle, and questions over his tenure at Hartlepool) was being brought in to sell off key players, perhaps for ESIv2 to make money if they do take the club into the new season and play the development squad. However, Bowyer blocked Jones coming in, as his contract (given to him by ESI v1),says he has final say on all transfers! It remains a bit unclear who owns the club, but seemingly ESI v1 still do, as the sale to ESI v2 seemed to be based on passing the EFL test. However, fears remain that new "stooges" are being put in place for ESI v2. Farnell remains around the place, possibly as club lawyer. But this is unclear. A fan has reported him to the SRA for investigation, questioning whether he has been acting for multiple parties - buyers and sellers, ESI1 and ESI2. Some of the above may not be completely correct, as its so bloody complicated, but it gives you an idea. When I left Stockport in '96 and moved down south I gradually jacked in going to football, especially seeing the way County were ruined. Then having two sons made me go again and Charlton were the nearest (decent) club. Wish I'd got them into something else now. The game is just a load of shite now compared to what I grew up with. If you do Twitter and feel inclined, please pass on the #SaveCAFC hash tag.

Two of my mates (Bury & Hartlepool fans) hate Jones with a passion.
I tried to defend him once but then was informed that Jones jumped at the first opportunity when he could have got County in the premier league.
It’s a strange situation for sure....

Either way, he’s always welcome back at EP to watch us and I’ve got a lot of affection for him but I’d have Jim over him any day.

Yep. I reckon if you’ve got the confidence/bluster you could quite easily get into one of these shitshow clubs on a huge salary and do absolutely nothing for 6-9 months and then walk away with a huge amount of money in the bank and not work for a few years. And then repeat.

Two of my mates (Bury & Hartlepool fans) hate Jones with a passion. I tried to defend him once but then was informed that Jones jumped at the first opportunity when he could have got County in the premier league. It’s a strange situation for sure.... It’s an odd one with him. You can’t knock his achievements with us, he gave us our best ever season and team and we’ve got memories that will last a lifetime. But he’s never struck me as somebody who ever really seems that arsed about the club he’s at. Which is fine, I suppose, it’s just a job so can’t blame him for chasing a bigger wage. I know I mention this all the time but I interviewed him for Flynny’s testimonial programme in 2014. I said something like ‘the common line is that if you’d have stayed and we hadn’t sold Alun and Paul Jones, we’d have reached the play offs in 97/98’. He replied ‘no, I don’t agree. I think we’d have gone straight up automatically’. But then gave his reason for leaving as a one in a lifetime opportunity to manage in the PL with Southampton. But he was adamant he’d have taken us up with that team - and remember Paul Jones and Toddy only left because he took them - so I’ve always thought he either didn’t really think he could take us up and that’s just a nice sound bite, he was offered loads more at Southampton and had a ready made PL job or knew Elwood would be looking to cash in on the likes of Marsden, Jones, Alun etc throughout 97/98 and knew he’d taken us as far as possible. Either way, he’s always welcome back at EP to watch us and I’ve got a lot of affection for him but I’d have Jim over him any day. Looking at 97/98, what stands out is the quality of the teams in the division. From memory? 1. Forest (with Van Hoidonk, Campbell, etc) 2. Boro (who had players like Gazza, Hignett) 3. Sunderland (Quinn, Philips, walked the division the year after) 4. Charlton (who went up in the Play Offs with Curbishly as boss, then had some good seasons in the Prem) 5. Ipswich (perennial Play Offs then did well in the Prem under George Burley) 6. Sheff U 7. Birmingham (under Trevor Francis who made the Play Offs most seasons after) Not sure we therefore would have got much closer than we did had we kept Dave Jones. In saying that, DJ is always No.1 for me, even above Danny, due to that season and the quality of the Football. Doesn't bother me that he wasn't really a 'County man', do a good job and then move on to better and you go with our best wishes IMO. And had things worked out differently with Jim in his jobs after his first spell as Manager, his situation wouldn't have been that different to DJ in that he did well for us, then moved on to better things. (in some ways I find it sad that Jim is back here, as feel he's underachieved, compared to his knowledge in the game)

I don't think we'd have won the league but I think we'd have done better than eigthth. Alun went on to became a decent Premier League striker before injury, Marsden was easily Premier League quality, as was Paul Jones. Cooper, Flynn, Angell were all superb in the second tier. Add in a couple of new additions of comparable quality and it's not impossible to think we could have finished in the top six. I was too young to really appreciate Danny, I only started going at the end of 93/94 so Jim is my number 1. But I agree with you that loving the club isn't a pre-requisite of the role, it's more of a bonus. That Jim is so entwined with County as player and manager makes it even better for us. But I don't hold it against Jones that it was just a job for him, if that's the case. I thought that a few years ago when he was at Northwich. I don't know what else Jim was doing with his life at that point so maybe it suited him perfectly but from a purely outsiders football perspective, it seemed a shame he was that low down given his ability. I think any notion of Jim underachieving will be blown away over the next 2-3 years. I really do think he'll have us back in League One very soon.

Agreed, I'll never forget how Jim outplayed and riled Lambert in the Playoffs and it's amazing to see how different their managerial career have been, although Lambert probably trades off his achievements as a player and associated contacts etc
I think Jim's issue is he is very determined to play football the correct way and build a professional set up throughout a club. We've benefitted from this and are now in a great position to progress as a club but a lot of managers will not get the time and patience of the board/fans to do this properly. Most fans/chairmen want a manager to hit the ground running and grind out results for short term success whereas Jim is much more long term focused. A few of our fans were frustrated he didn't get us out of NLN at the first attempt and wanted him out etc.
I think Jim's preferred approach made the initial relegation escape in 2005/6 so impressive as he had very little to work with in such a short space of time, the loan signings were critical. His other issue is that he doesn't tolerate the 'social loafers' and unfortunately there are a lot of these within football, so if results aren't going your way the dressing room may turn on you like at Port Vale.
Hopefully we manage to climb the leagues with Jim and gets a chance to manage at a decent level again.
