Oh, the humanity! As is our wont, JJ109 and I decided to get lunch from The Friary and eat it by Sykes' Reservoir. When we got there the shutters were down, the shop sign was missing and it seems to be in the middle of a refurb. I hope that's all it is and it's not going to turn into a Vape Shop or something, that could change the face of pre-match groceries forever.

😢
Midweek home games will never be the same again if that’s gone. Hopefully just a temporary closure.

I had a similar trauma when I was back in England recently, we also planned to eat ours at Sykes rezzers, my heart sank when we saw it locked up.

Refurbishment.....trust me. You'll like it. Residing in Leeds I have Leeds fish and chips. They're ok, if you've ever lived in the Midlands you'll know that most places are better than Midland fish and chips (timber I'm thinking of Tony's opposite your old garage I think Lucy the dog even refused them from there!). But they don't match the flavours of the north west so losing the friary would be a sad loss. Here's a definitive list of why north western chippies are better than Leeds - pies and puddings. In the north west they sell a decent range in Leeds they just serve fish. - vegetable oil - decent portion of chips. In Leeds they don't pile the chips on. - opening times. Try getting fish and chips live past 20.00. They think that only rubbish chippies open post 19.00 so very few stay open at normal hours.

- decent portion of chips. In Leeds they don't pile the chips on. That reminds me of the chippy in Bollington that my friends from Happy Valley used to call "Pinchbag's." It always looked like the bloke was piling the chips on to overflowing but he actually had the little paper bag clamped shut with his hand to make the portion look more generous than it was.

When I was “on the road” (going back a bit now) there used to be some belting Chippies around Leeds and Bradford. Don’t think I ever found one in Udderssfield though for some reason.

If you're ever in Macc you have to try the chippy near the Macc pub, a portion there is like 2 in most places.

One of the first things we do when coming up from Ilkeston to watch County is go to the Friary for Pudding, chips and gravy before washing it down with a couple of pints. Can't get Pudding at the chippy's down here and starting to get withdrawal symptoms now!

Most of the chippys I seem to go to the portion sizes have gotten larger and larger and are now generally massive and over-facing.
