Not sure about the portion thing. Most of the chippys I seem to go to the portion sizes have gotten larger and larger and are now generally massive and over-facing. if you ever manage to go to hartlepool again ask for a Half Lot. smaller fish with a smaller portion of chips. its big enough for me and at youngs in seaton carew its 3.50 for that which includes the choice of gravy, mushy peas or curry sauce plus a hot or cold drink.

You can’t beat a baby’s head, chips, mushy peas and gravy with a couple of rounds of soggy bread and marge. I don’t like fish, but have dabbled in fish bits. Do they still do those?

This thread makes me think back to my biggest ever chippy order (from Tony's in Ancoats), large chips, gravy, fish, jumbo sausage, meat and potato pie & a buttered barm

The Great Moor chippy (Near the shell station) does a very nice smaller portion of fish and chips. Very tasty and reasonably priced.

Last time I went to Hartlepool wasn't for County, it was with a Stevenage mate. There were about 32 Stevenage fans there, and it was Baltic. Hammered Pools though, who were dreadful.
Ended up in that little pub near the station, about the size of a pinhead. Very Brexity place, quite odd.

Pre-Covid I spent a lot of time working away especially in the North East and it's fair to say the further North you go the better they get, special mentions to the chippy's in South Shields and Tynemouth, they are on another level to anything locally.

Been up there many times and I disagree, most coastal towns do good Fish and last year I had a superb example in Portsmouth but the Friary can hold its own against any.

Trouble is, that i don't like curry with pie. I don't mind curry or gravy with sausage.

Best chippy in the world is in Whitby, can't remember it's name but it has those ropes outside where vips queue up. North East is good especially one in Seahouses. Locally the Dolphin in Reddish used to be great, not been for years though.

Went there with my wife just because we got married and had basic fish and chips with a bottle of champagne. Felt like a right tit.

Best fish and chips is a van that does the villages down on the Roseland peninsula down in Cornwall. Fresh as you like, all cooked in beef dripping. Long way to go for it mind...

The Magpie on Pier Street is the one I always think of, almost always a queue outside and priced according to its reputation. I've only been in once and was distinctly underwhelmed but perhaps that was a reaction to the hype.

It was fine, perfectly enjoyable and somewhat enhanced by the overblown but faded setting but judging purely the plate of food, it was a 6/10 at best.
