I'd include Zidane in that group.

Zidane rather than Cantona I'd have thought.
I'd say the list of 'best player in world' loosely goes like this...
Puskas 50s Pele 60s Cruyff 70s Maradona 80s Zidane 90s Brazil Ronaldo early 00s Messi late 00s to early 10s C Ronaldo late 10s
A bit of an oversimplication of dates, but I can't think of anyone obvious I'm missing. You've players like Ronaldinho who were great for a year or two, but never quite at the sustained level / length of time as the men above.

Wow! completely missed this yesterday. Broke my heart with 'the hand of God' in '86 & hated him for years after but as a football fan i can't deny he was one of the greatest players ever, flawed certainly, but when i was growing up there was no-one who came close to his level of talent. R.I.P. Diego.

The recent film that followed him in Napoli was brilliant. Even the Mrs enjoyed watching it.

Best was well before my time but he was well past his best by then wasn't he?

It's all before my time, but I've always been under the impression that Best was one of those players who was absolutely outstanding /arguably the best in the world for maybe a year or two, but didn't sustain his peak very long.
More Ronaldinho than Ronaldo essentially?
As I say well before my time, so could well be wrong on that...

Even braver to put Matthews above Kev, Neil did have one fantastic goal scoring run... but not GOAT material surely
