Peter Martin, who played Joe Carroll in The Royle Family, died last week. And his characters wife was Mary. Fantastic comedy, 2nd only to Early Doors

I knew her sister Dee in the late 80s and I took her to 78 exchange on Underbanks to look for an old LP Linda made she was trying to find, amazingly they had a copy. Big part of the late 60s early 70s scene, friends with Rod, Bowie, Bolan etc. very good singer.

I read today that the 3 Lewis sisters made an album together.

We had the same manager when I was doing music, a guy called John Noel, he was based in Altrincham at the time (now London) she came to Stockport to record some demoes and I did a few bits and bobs on them, think the studio was in Hazel Grove if I remember correctly, or was it nearer Stockport? Really can’t remember. We just nipped into town for a coffee and I told her 78 exchange was worth a visit. On a side note, if you ever hear When will I be famous by Bros, it’s Dee singing the chorus. She was a nice lady, not seen her since end of the 80/ early 90s, her other sis was Shirley.

I'm familiar with that Bros tune though I can't say it's one I'm ever in a hurry to revisit. I believe the other sister Shirley was actually married to one of Bros too.

Very sad. I'd heard he was very ill with cancer, so it wasn't massively unexpected, but still a shocker. Couple of memories: Him and Johnny giving me and a mate snuff (I know) in an empty classroom one day. It was unexpectedly pleasant - very menthol flavoured. At the time he was apparently into other more dodgy substances, but bizarrely, snuff what what he shared with me. Our form room was also the music room, and I remember him making the class laugh by playing the hook from Are Friends Electric on the piano, using two fingers, before the teacher arrived. Johnny takes most of the musical plaudits from The Smiths' career, understandably, but lots of people today pointing out what an excellent and innovative bassist Andy was. RIP.

The rhythm section of The Smiths is criminally under-rated in my view, not least by the lead singer. I'm no muso, so take my opinion on that basis, but I was listening to 'Meat is Murder' a few days ago and, even if you ignore the obvious 'Barbarism Begins At Home' where he gets away with a solo, I think that album is where Andy Rourke's bass playing is absolutely at its peak. I've said this elsewhere today, but I met him briefly a couple of times, one of which was at a gig he played with Mike Joyce in Poynton, in the old cinema that's now an Aldi. On both occasions he seemed a really gentle person without any of the bullshit that I think you could easily project if you had been The Smiths' bassist. A big loss, that makes this Smiths fan far sadder than I thought I would be. I watched a video of them earlier playing the aforementioned 'Barbarism...' on The Tube and, well, anyway... 😪 There is a light that never goes out.

Yeah, Barbarism has got loads of press today (and rightly so) but so many examples of his excellence. The one I keep going back to is What Difference Does It Make, the whole song is propelled by his bass.
The last minute or so is utterly glorious.

The Barbarism bass line make an appearance in the last 30 seconds of this. The whole song is well worth a listen though, nice little mash up of LCD Soundsytem, Chic and The Smiths.
