Whatever the ins and outs of the matter, Simon Wilson has made an absolute pigs ear of his role. He’s completely lost the trust of the supporters, he’s introduced players who are past their best on high wages and long contracts, characters who may or may not be, good influences on the squad. Whilst Jim Gannon has to take some responsibility for his own demise, whatever Jim’s way of doing things was, it was definitely far less profligate and more successful than Wilson’s MO, what’s more, Jim represented the soul of the club, the lineage back to Danny Bergara, amongst so many other things. The introduction of Simon Rusk, on paper at least, could have been a good appointment, but he was clearly doomed from the start, in a David Moyes type way (at least Ferguson left of his own accord). The weight of expectation and following a club legend who was doing well, was nigh on impossible, surely a middling NL team would have been a better starting point for Rusk to learn the ropes of management. Wilson needs to take a long hard look at himself, he’s wasted so much potential, if he doesn’t get the next part right he has to resign, in fairness to Mark Stott (who, thankfully, remains popular) and to the supporters and to Simon Rusk if he goes, because he has let them all down badly. Good post. My issue is will there be a “next part “? I can’t see Rusk going now. I was convinced yesterday was the day but hey ho, we carry on regardless with next to no hope. I think rusk will be given time. If he survives Wrexham (ie we don't get battered) he'll get the easier games to get confidence back. Perhaps long term he'll learn and grow, can't see it myself but there's always another game in football.

[br) As you will probably know, I’d take no joy in Rusk going, I believe you have to have some principles in life, and to sack a manager after 7 games doesn’t sit well with me, especially as we are presumably paying off Jim, where does it all end? That said, I’ve been following County for 50 years and barring some miracle run of results and a road to Damascus attitude change from some the players, I really can’t see Simon Rusk lasting any longer than a couple of weeks, it’s an unholy mess frankly and like many, I don’t really trust Wilson to make the right decision.

Plenty of people talking that all he's got to do is get through the Wrexham game and then we'll sail through the next ten games. We won't, because we're not very good. We'd be lucky to string together three two a win at the moment, let alone go smash through half the division. And that's almost an admission that we're happy to settle for being the best of the rest. It's fine to lose to lose to all the title challengers like *consults notes* Dagenham, Yeovil and, erm, Halifax, it says here? because 'they're up there' (after 0 games, 5 games and 7 games), as if that's an excuse. That mentality means it's fine for us to settle for 5th/6th. Which is bollocks, frankly. The squad we've got, the facilities, infrastructure blah blah should see us challenging for top spot. Don't care that Chesterfield, Wrexham, Notts etc have decent squads, they won't be settling for 5th/6th, they'll be aiming to win the leage.

Not often we agree, but this is exactly it. In some ways I think Rusk would have been better off doing what James Rowe did. Both young managers who started coaching and looking after youth/development football; only difference is that Rowe went to be an assistant manager under an experienced non league and lower league manager in Gary Waddock then cut his teeth at Gloucester before being taken by Chesterfield. I think Rusk can still be a good manager, but he has been failed by recruitment (and we will never know just how much of that is to do with Wilson or himself, but based on balance of probabilities I think it's reasonable that Wilson is pulling more strings than we would all like) and a job where really there isn't much headroom for big mistakes. For what it's worth, I think if Rusk gets a win against Wrexham he will crawl through to around Christmas. Lose against Wrexham and the atmosphere will be so toxic it will make his job untenable. You know that I don't rate Rusk - but I won't take pleasure in the ugliness if that happens; I'll be angry at the club for not putting him out of his misery so to speak.

The style of football is enough for me, imagine a full season of this garbage, finishing mid table and then the ensuing propaganda to try and tell us everything went to plan. Makes me feel ill thinking about it.

What evidence is there to suggest any sort of promise for him being a manager though? Your post makes sense till that part. U23’s managers are only managers by title, they’re coaches in reality. Fundamentally that’s why the appointment was doomed from the start.

Fundamentally that’s why the appointment was doomed from the start. Think there were foundations of promise last season with his away record and the fact our main weakness under Gannon last season was that we were too leaky at the back. He certainly fixed that last season and maybe as I said if he had started following an experienced manager or gone for a job with lower expectations he could have worked on that. I don't disagree that the appointment was shit and doomed to fail from the start for what it's worth. No manager with 0 experience of senior football should have been given this role. It's whether Mark Stott has a backbone to intervene and demand Wilson appoints someone with experience rather than another Rusk 2.0.

I'm the same as you in feeling like he's just not going to go. Saturday seemed like the point where it was untenable. Just how bad does this Saturday have to get before it truly is untenable?

Precisely, some people will already be well into the hundreds of £s spent watching County this season and the optimism is draining (has drained!) rapidly. I’m there on Saturday but depending how that goes, I’ve got other commitments which I’d much rather spend my time and money on at the moment.

Anyone who decides they’re not going after a particular moment in time must by definition have been someone who used to go previously. I believe the club refer to such people as “legacy fans”.

<snip> It's fine to lose to lose to all the title challengers like *consults notes* Dagenham, Yeovil and, erm, Halifax, it says here? because 'they're up there' (after 0 games, 5 games and 7 games), as if that's an excuse. That mentality means it's fine for us to settle for 5th/6th. Which is bollocks, frankly. <snip> It is that. Those advancing that argument should remember that part of the reason those clubs are 'up there' is because they've got three points off us.

Rusk won’t make a decent football manager if he tries until he is 90. He ain’t got it , never had , never will . He’s best coaching kids where it’s active participation and everyone tries their best
