It always makes me wonder though why football needs to be as tribal as it is. So you are firstly a fan of the game and then split up into a fan of the different clubs about. Usually its an act of geography or place of birth that causes this so really its accidental. We have more in common with each other than we have not and all with similar wishes. I would never dream of going into any end with another sides colour on, but is this the ideal situation to live in. Over the last few years we have become more tolerant and rightly so, however why does football and other team sports have to lag behind in this. Remember the bloke you bump into on holiday with say a grimsby shirt on. He aint got two heads and you enjoy the natter on football easily over a pint ot two. That's a fair point. Outside a football ground I'll happily chat to a supporter of another team, get their perspective on how things are going. Especially if it's not a big Prem club. Was chatting to a Sheff Weds fan the other day. Decent bloke who was interested to hear about County. However, I guess it depends on the fan. Those who sit in a grounds home end wearing colours of another team clearly don't get it. And is tribalism all that bad? Surely that's part of the excitement? The sense of belonging, being part of something bigger. Being part of a tradition. I don't mean tedious bantz or cruel, taunting chants - I simply mean that feeling of being immersed in the moment, of everyone wanting the same thing, everyone linked by their support for the team. That vibe is weakened if you've got lots of non-committed spectators or disinterested neutrals in the crowd. Yeah to me it's the same mentality of playing.
For 90 minutes and maybe even the lead up to the game it's the triablism and I like that you vs us mentality that we certainly should want to our players to have.
Away from that though, chat to anybody of any team generally.
I do find when to lower league sides meet there's a bigger mutual respect than when I hear my mate who's United for example start speaking to someone who supports Arsenal etc.

Some premier league fans can be great too. Meet an Arsenal fan in Mexico last year and he loved talking about football in general and really interested in hearing about County. We got on really well and we still exchange texts about the games now. Really hoping I can send him one congratulating him on winning the title 😀

think the big difference is match going fans v TV fans, even among fans of the big premier league clubs, you'll find you've more in common with a match going Spurs fan than a TV watching Liverpool fan.

A look of contempt is as far as I engage with TV Premier League fans

Liverpool fan at work (he's actually from Wrexham): 'Did you watch the game last night?' ... It's the way Prem armchair Super Sky watchers assume the world revolves around their teams.

Have total contempt for the say man,u fan who lives in say reading who never attends a game but has bought ever item there is from their club shop to wear at the pub and on holiday. This type seem to have more to say about their team than those who actually watch home and away. Bet exiles know loads of this type. See a lower division shirt on the street and they,ll more likely be a fan that attends or an exile that cannot but still has a love for his side. Really its a case of armchair v attenders where i have some respect for all of the latter as we are in the same boat. That includes burnley fans and i hate to say it some of the gresty road mob.

When i have been asked this i just reply that we were not playing last night or i went to a local non league game even if i hadn,t. Its just nice to see their face and reaction by being a heretic.

FCUM fans both home and at EP seem the oddest of the odd. Seem to have not making even eye contact with County fans was a big success. I have never snubbed a fan of another club but have been twice by a couple of that lot on a couple of occasions.

The one thing I’d say in defence of that presumption is that, when I had a BT Sport sub last season, I’d often have whatever game was on in the background. I guess if you assume everyone subscribes to Sky Sports, you’d think they’d have had it on too?

Just another on the list of modern day presumption that are around with if i have got it everyone else has or should have it. Do not think there is anything new in this either as many car owners say 40 years back could not get it that a guy say 30 years old with a family didn,t have even a driving licence never mind a car because he was just not interested. Same in todays world where i can happy to live without a sat nav or smart phone.

I have to say I don't see the problem in asking someone you know is a football fan if they watched a TV game the previous evening. I mean, if you don't have a sub, just say so and ask whether it was a good game, etc. You know, talk about football for a bit. It's part of getting on with people 😂
If I asked someone that and he replied in a snotty way, I'd just think "okay, fair enough, you're not someone I'm going to interact with much from now on."

Well that would certainly suit me as i have nothing in common with a premier league armchair fan who never goes to games. The ones i have come into contact with just do not speak my language anyway. Mind you those at work who were into DIY were the same and i never knew that there was another jigsaw unless it was boxed with a certain number of pieces in it. Its good we are all different and i can bore others to death on motoring in the past and dogs.
