Dramatic match in Tallaght this evening - Shelbourne dominated the first half, and deservedly led 2-1 at the break, Rovers equalised in the 83rd minute before the ref signalled four minutes of injury time. Various delays meant that crept into the 95th minute, in which the probable Player of the Season, Rory Gaffney, struck the winner for the champions, who thus regain a five-point lead at the top of the table. How would a group of English be welcomed at a match over there? One of our mates is a big Mayo man when it comes to that mad game where you get points for the ball going over the bar, they must pley the real game somewhere round there. Sligo Rovers or Galway United would be the closest Lea0gue clubs, and they're both around 60-70 miles away. Other than that it's local County League teams.

I threw a bet away on that. Gah!

An emotional night at Finn Park, as the local side marked the first home match since the Donegal tragedy, but on the pitch, Harps lost 2-1 to Dundalk, increasing their relegation concerns. St Pat's defeated Bohemians 3-1 in the Dublin derby to maintain their push for the side, while the away side announced the appointment of former Derry manager Declan Devine.
In the First Division, newly-crowned champions Cork lost 3-2 to in-form Athlone Town, whose resurgence over the last two months has been remarkable. Cobh Ramblers finish their campaign bottom of the League, but somehow conclude with a 5-1 win away to Bray Wanderers. In a typical "end-of-season tie" , Wexford and Galway United played out a scoreless draw, so Waterford should secure the runner-up slot next week. In Sunday's FAI Cup semis, Derry will be expected to defeat Treaty United, while Waterford and Shelbourne is too close to call.

Derry City and Shelbourne will cost the season-ending FAI Cup final on November 13th, after the former ended the gallant resistance of Treaty United in a 2-1 win at the Ryan McBride Brandywell, while the latter won a dour encounter 1-0 away to Waterford. Shamrock Rovers dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Drogheda United, and have a 6-point lead over Derry, though with a game extra played.

If I wasn't already booked up that weekend I'd bob over to watch the Candystripes. Good to see they've hit form at a good point in the season, unlike last year when they went to pot completely.

The title race appears virtually over, as Shamrock Rovers came from behind to defeat St Pats 4-1, and Derry were held by Shelbourne, meaning the Northerners trail by 8 with three games remaining, and one of those is against the current champions. At the bottom, UCD won 2-1 against Drogheda to move off the foot of the table, while Finn Harps were held 2-2 away to Bohemians.
The First Division regular season concluded tonight, with Cork City celebrating through a 2-0 home win against Bray. Waterford go into the playoffs on a high, defeating Athlone 4-2, and will now meet Treaty United, who lost to Wexford. Galway will play Longford in the other semi, with their dress rehearsal finishing 3-3 tonight.

Shamrock Rovers have secured their third successive title, and 20th in all, after Derry City were held to a scoreless draw away to Sligo Rovers. UCD's draw at Shelbourne means the Students move three points clear of Finn Harps with two games remaining, and will avoid automatic relegation with victory against their Donegal rivals on Friday.

Since about 2003, largely done because it was considered to boost European results, which certainly proved true in that decade, particularly with Cork, Shels and Bohs, but more mixed in recent years, even with Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers regularly making group stages.

I'd also recommend this month's issue of When Saturday Comes, which covers the inaugural First Division season - sadly, a number of said clubs are no longer with us, and Wexford are the only side who joined subsequent to that season still a permanent presence in the league.

After four years in the Premier Division, Finn Harps have been relegated to the First, thanks to a 3-1 defeat at home to UCD, the latter facing a play-off against the eventual First Division qualifiers. All outstanding issues were settled yesterday, with Dundalk securing European qualification after they won against Bohemians, while St Pat's lost to Sligo. Shelbourne thrashed Drogheda 6-0 in the very definition of a dead rubber match.
In the First Division, the first play-off semi between Longford and Galway is delicately balanced at 2-2 after the first leg in the Midlands, but Waterford overpowered Treaty United 4-1 in Limerick, that result meaning the latter could well be facing derby matches against Kerry in 2023.

Dublin City Council give Bohs approval for a 7,880 capacity, four-stand (which is somewhat of a rarity in the LoI) redevelopment of Dalymount Park, the only concern for fans being the three-year timetable for completion, given discussions on the project have already been rather protracted: bohemianfc.com/?p=18646
