Something a little bit different for you today, an extract from Ben Aitken’s new book. Ben was born under Thatcher, grew to 6ft then stopped, and is an Aquarius. (His words.) He’s also one of my favourite authors at the moment. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed his four previous books (Dear Bill Bryson, A Chip Shop in Poznan, The Gran Tour and The Marmalade Diaries) and I’m currently reading his latest excellent tale, which is basically a year of trying to have more fun. There’s absolutely all sorts of activities in the book, one of which is joining a veterans’ football team. I thought that would make an interesting article for you lot, so with Ben’s permission, here’s a little taster. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/here-comes-the-fun

The last few years haven’t been the best for some of Greater Manchester’s traditional Football League clubs. Bury were expelled in 2019, Oldham dropped out in 2022, and now Rochdale are gearing up for trips to Woking and Wealdstone next season. Dean from RochdaleAFC.com joins us today to reflect on Dale’s demise. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/the-king-has-had-his-coronation-now-844

The last team to feature in our 2022-23 review were Colchester, who found themselves in the relegation zone at Christmas. The other club stuck in the bottom two as Santa was zipping round the skies was Gillingham, who were still rock bottom in mid-January. But following their American takeover, the Gills were one of the form teams in League Two over the second half of the season. Matt Boosey from Gills in the Blood reflects on an eventful campaign in Kent. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/the-king-has-had-his-coronation-now-6bc

Seems to be really well respected by everyone, and a very decent coach.
