It's really good this one, everybody. Vicar has shared snippets of this on here over the years, which makes the chance to read the whole tale really alluring- our man's storytelling does not let us down!

I've just taken delivery of this book, as a free gift within part of a gift subscription to the fantastic Scottish football magazine Nutmeg that I've got young GH for Christmas (it's OK, I don't think he lurks/trolls me on here anymore...). Des is right, the guy is an amazing writer, such an observer and illuminator of small details. Take this passage from a page I opened at random- part of an account on an afternoon spent at a rainy Autumnal Kendal Town vs Tadcaster... 'Each time players migrated to the sideline, their stampeding feet made sploshing, pitter-patter melodies in the sodden turf. It sounded as if ballet were being performed in a sheep dip. Added to this oddly therapeutic composition was the rustling of leaves in those parts of the pitch overshadowed by shedding trees. On several occasions, a defender clouted the ball clear and found he had also inadvertently summoned a shooting star of russet, amber and ochre, like some Autumnal magician. Or a sudden gale would conjure a leaf whirlwind around a winger as he dribbled forward. The only thing missing from the scene was a goalkeeper challenging a full-back to a game of conkers'. There's 176 pages in the book and having read some of Gray's other stuff I know it will be of similar quality. Pure poetry.

It’s Christmas Eve! Although I am feeling a bit of a Scrooge today. I sent a strongly-worded message to Keighren, Lee, Brown and Baker informing them that under no circumstances were they allowed any turkey or mince pies until they’d answered my festive questions. Fortunately, they’ve all responded, so as you’re tucking into your Christmas dinner tomorrow, you can be safe in the knowledge your favourite County correspondents won’t be going hungry. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/a-christmas-eve-chat-with-your-favourite
