Just looked up on wiki about the 96/97 team. From March 15th onwards we didn't win by anymore than 1 clear goal until the end of the season.
So winning ugly is what we have to do for the rest of the season!

I'll take 8 ugly wins on the bounce right now, we can concentrate on winning pretty from the comfort of league 1 later 😁

All about making the play offs as a minimum. Same again should we make it. Could end up being three draws with two penalty shootouts and the outcome is all the same as if we’d won every game 3nil!

Yep. A year ago yesterday was Eastleigh away, the final game of the run. Of the next 8 matches we lost five of them and, other than beating Southend 5-0, didn't really play that well in any of them. Wrexham 0-2 Southend 5-0 Grimsby 1-2 Solihull 1-0 Yeovil 1-2 Boreham Wood 1-2 Chesterfield 1-0 Wrexham 0-3 We managed to turn it round in the final two against Torquay and Halifax but performances are secondary to results now. I'd love us to turn it on and thump Salford, Sutton, Gills and Carlisle in the next four but I'd be equally happy with four horrible 1-0 or 2-1 wins. In fact, I'd prefer it. It's about the time of year we all love a bit of jeopardy, isn't it? So single goal victories are perfect for that.

The record books show that we won 1-0 & gained 3 points. We still get the same number of points whether we scrape a 1-0 win or annihilate the opposition with our brand of total football.
3 points is 3 points...move on

Seven games where it's 0-0 in the 90th minute and we bag late winners. That's the dream.

Compared to last season I think we're a 7/10 compared to 8/10 given we were in first position this time last year even and we were the ones being chased not the chasers though granted this was a lot harder league to get out of

Last season, we were really good most of the year, then did just enough in tight games at the end of the season to get us over the line.
This year, we've been doing just enough in tight games all year, which doesn't give quite as much confidence for the last few weeks.

I don't think we'll be far off automatic. Might come down to GD so thumping someone along the way would help.

Thumping someone is not only improving the goal difference but takes the pressure off the team and should give em more confidence. An early goal at EP should give em more confidence to push on for more. Could be worse though having to outscore the opposition every week by having a dodgy defence.

So winning ugly is what we have to do for the rest of the season! I remember that there were some real scraps towards the end of that season. Burnley, Crewe and I think Watford were all 1-0. There was a game V Wycombe at home which was 2-1 and it was one of the tensest games I've ever been at. Of course Chesterfield away I don't think was noted for its sparkling football either. That team could play some unbelievable stuff at times, which they're still renowned for but they could also mix it up when needed. Similar to DC's style now in many ways. If there had been the internet like it is now back then there would have been bellyaching all over the show about how we were just scraping through games.
