Does anyone on here remember a County fan called Anthony Stephen Turner? Usually known as Tony, apparently lived in the USA for many years. As you'll see from the MEN report below, he died in Manchester on the 29th of September last year but some, at least, of his friends and family didn't find out until much later. A non-County friend has asked me if anyone here or elsewhere on the County socials knows of him or anything further about what happened before or after his death. www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/police-hunt-family-man-found-25226271

Sad to hear about Tony. I met him about 30 years ago when we were both working in Bermuda. Lost touch and had had no idea that he had recently died. I believe he was a pal of Bermuda Hatter of this parish although Mark has been absent from these pages for quite a while now.

He was a chef and, as you mentioned, worked in Bermuda. He was living in the States before travelling back home for medical treatment at the Alexandra Hospital, where my mate last saw him. On trying to get back into the USA he was turned back because there was a problem with his visa and at the time of his death he was staying in Manchester while he tried to sort out a return to the States. My mate and others who knew Tony would like to know what happened after his death, whether there was any sort of funeral &c. There's a reply from his niece on Twitter to the Police appeal for relatives but she only found out about his passing five months after the event, I'll try to get a message to her to investigate further.

To bring the thread up to date, it appears Tony is still in the keeping of Manchester Royal Infirmary. His family are trying to have him released to their care so they can arrange a funeral but the authorities are being difficult.

I'm advised that Tony's cremation is scheduled for 9:30, Friday 5th May at Southern Cemetery, Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester M21 7GZ. No ceremony, just the very basics and, as far as I can tell, not many family able to be there. If I get any further details, I'll post them on here. I know a couple of people who will be going and although I didn't know him myself, Janice and I will try to get there and wear a scarf for a lifelong County fan.

Not being smart arse but do not go to Southern Cemetery. That’s a council owned cemetery next door to the privately owned Manchester Crematorium which is where the funeral is. I was the MD there a few years back. Almost every funeral has mourners arrive late as they end up at the wrong place. You did put the right postcode though.

I didn't realise there was a difference, so I'm very grateful for your help. As luck would have it, I've emailed Manchester Crematorium to make sure the few details I have are correct but I could just as easily have picked the address for the Cemetery instead.

Has anyone got a photo they can post, I think I might know him and we're roughly the same age.

I think I've got all the info together now. Tony's funeral will be at Manchester Crematorium at 09:30 on Friday 5th May, *probably* in the newer of the two chapels. There will be a short address by the Hospital Chaplain, the whole ceremony will only last 30 minutes. My partner and I are planning to go and meet up with people we know who shared a house in Levenshulme with Tony in the 1970s. It's unclear how many family will be able to attend so we thought the occasion shouldn't go unmarked. I've sent an email to Steve Bellis to ask if Tony's name can be added to the rollcall at the Remembrance Match next November even though it will be over a year since he died.

I'll try and get there too, if I can. Maybe we could have a turnout for him? Tony used to subscribe to "The Tea Party" from Bermuda. I think we've got a photo of him in one of the back issues - I'll try and dig it out if I can. I think I once met him in Sportspages in Manchester when he was over here for a visit - this'd be mid-90s.

Thanks for that Dave; after making all this fuss about a bloke I've never met, it's reassuring to know that he *was* a County fan and I haven't been barking up entirely the wrong tree 😉

I've got a picture in my head of someone I used to see at a lot of giggs in the 70s and I've no idea why.
