Say it every year but one of the reasons for the disregard for this competition is the prize money is so woeful.
In 2022 it was £5k for winning the first round. It's nothing. Would just about cover Nick Powell from here to the weekend. Loads of Championship clubs go out at this stage a they know they won't win the thing and the prize money is so low it's not worth going through, so just play the kids and get knocked out. Even getting to the final only gives you a cumulative total of about £100k.
The EFL Trophy was something like £20k just for taking part, then either £10k/£15k a win. Win your group with three wins and you've got a nice little pot.
Not really sure what the answer is with the Carabao to get people taking it seriously, suspect the horse has long since bolted. Increasing the prize money might be one hook, but which sponsor is going to plough loads into it when there's such little interest?
It's unfair to compare this to the 1996 Blackburn game, that was totally different. This is more like the second round game against Sheffield United. We didn't have much more than 4k in that night but we still took it seriously.

You want to kill the league cup off? That's like something an armchair premier league fan would say! I don't expect us to progress tonight due to the squad/injury situation but it's a competition I'm very glad we're involved in again especially after having to suffer the F.A. trophy for 11 years! I couldn't care less if the big boys don't take it seriously until the later rounds nowadays, it give clubs like ourselves (if we weren't injury ravaged) to progress & create some magical nights against higher opposition. All cups are shite since the weakened teams became a thing, the league cup serves no purpose, sack it off, and bring in proper rules on team strength in the FA Cup and the BDSM. The kids these days have no hope of seeing a proper cup tie. Liverpool didn’t piss about when we played them and they were European champions. It would be good if the F.A. had the balls to do that with the F.A. cup I agree, but the F.A. seem content on destroying their own cup competition with every passing year. You'd take the BSM cup over the league cup though? seriously? & Of course kids still have a chance of seeing proper cup ties nowadays, plenty of kids looked pretty ecstatic when non league Stockport County beat league 1 Bolton in recent times! If we somehow got to the 3rd round of the league cup this season & drew Liverpool away & beat them it wouldn't matter to any of us if Liverpool fielded a shite side, that's their look out, it would still go down as a famous County win, their fans might say 'we fielded a weak side, it's a mickey mouse trophy' blah blah (like most premier league fans say until they win it) we wouldn't give a shit about that! I get what you're saying about when we played them when they European champions but that was when football wasn't all about the bloody Premier league or the Champions league & wasn't ruined by money. Teams wanted to win trophies back then rather than finish one place higher in the premier league to grab an extra couple of million in place money. League football is the bread & butter & doing well in whatever division is the ultimate aim over a season for clubs & fans but cup football can bring extra excitement & keeps alive whatever little bit of romanticism is left in the game nowadays, the David vs. Goliath scenario, the chance a giant killing. I never want to see that gone from our domestic game.

If we beat Blackburn tonight it won’t be anything like the achievement of beating them in 96, or any of the games in that run, or QPR, or even getting draws against Everton and Liverpool. The cups are downgraded now to the point that even the lower league teams play weakened sides. It’s because of how great cups used to be that it’s so sad how they’ve been downgraded, and it’s never going back to how it was.

Money clearly flown in on backburn, they’re as short as 1/2 now. Opened around 6/4, can work out how strong our line up is going to be from that!

It’s because of how great cups used to be that it’s so sad how they’ve been downgraded, and it’s never going back to how it was. I agree with that. It's only the 1st round tonight so no way will it compare to beating them in '96, as someone else said it would be akin to beating Sheff Utd in that run. That was a good win then but we didn't get too giddy about it but if we went on a run like '96 I think the majority of us would still get a bit giddy. Get where you're coming from though. It won't happen tonight anyway as I think we'll get tonked! The premier league & the Champions league have had a detrimental effect on domestic cup competitions. Even teams that aren't going to trouble the European spots are more interested in the extra place money in the premier league rather than adding a trophy to their history books. It'll never happen because UEFA want to expand their cash cow but I'd rather we gave 3 champions league places to the teams that wins the top division, the F.A. cup & the league cup at least they'd be champions of something rather than qualifying by finishing 4th which makes a mockery of the title 'champions league' You're champions of nothing in my book if you finish 4th in the premier league.

Do we have any idea how seriously Rovers are taking this? Haven't looked to see if perhaps they have injury concerns or wanting to play some young talent as well. Was thinking of being a contrarian and seeing what I can get for odds for County (on my side of the pond, not as many options).

I can make a half decent profit now, just by cashing out the bets I placed 3 days ago. I won't though. If we are going to get thrashed tonight I'd like to be appropriately compensated.

Saw an interview with Eustace & he said we gave them a tough game in pre-season so he won't take us lightly.

I'd like to see a manager declare in a pre-match interview that he is going to take the opposition lightly.

One of their forums seems torn, like they need to run out some new players, some saying start a strong 11, get a lead then mass substitue. They don't seem especially bothered about it in comparison to the league (much like us), but some have mentioned being tired of losing cup matches to lower division opponents. Oh well, I put a small amount on County at +390, just in case

Why would anyone give this a swerve, Blackburn in the league cup is a big game and I remember taking thousands there in a league cup game, I have some very good memories of our clashes in this competition. When we played them in 96 they’d been Prem league champions 15 months previously and played their first team, it was a massive game. Now we’re playing their reserves and putting out a largely 2nd string team ourselves, it’s not remotely the same, the comp should be killed off really. Still, 6 hour round trip it is, and half a nights sleep tonight. I disagree but gave you the thumbs up for making the trip, good effort.

Think we'll go full rotation except maybe a few that are still building minutes. Barry is one of those but feels a really big risk. Can you imagine the uproar if he took a knock or worse?
Diamond is maybe a good shout as a player who could benefit from an extra game. Was a bright spark Saturday but looked rusty / lacked the final ball/touch.
I've ventured back to our friendly match reports and am going for:
Hinchliffe Onyango Mapengu Hughes Okeke Mingi Bailey Hilary Diamond Fevrier Gardner
Provisionally 3-4-3 but you could tweak it so it's 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-1-2.
Metcalfe; H. Johnson; Lawless (what a name!); Watson Some other kids?

Next to no chance Wooton and Mingi will start. Probably not Diamond or Touray either. Can you let me know who to replace them all with for my FanHub prediction then 😂 I just can’t see Challinor making 11 changes and they felt like the players most likely to stay in to me. Good chance Mingi will start for me. He's NOT in the promotional picture. He needs minutes after basically missing preseason. He came off Saturday. We have no one else!

The need for minutes & lack of alternative were the two for me. That, and it’s Fevrier in the promo pic 😆
