]When you look at that 66/67 squad & what many of them had achieved earlier in their career, its incredible.[/div] Derek Kevan for instance had been playing for England 5 years earlier & had played in the 1958 World Cup, but the money wasn't there to allow them to finish at the top, so they gradually made their way down the leagues.
[/quote] Derek Kevan was a top draw hero at West Brom probably still is and did stay into next year but it didn’t work out although 23 appearances and 7 goals is ok He was replaced by Jim Fryatt who played 32 times and got 22 goals Meanwhile Bill Atkins played 44 times and got 16 goals Correction from above Stuart and Woods both played 67/68 with 33 and 39 appearances but we started shipping goals badly as the season progressed

Small aside, in the very early 80s I worked at the Halifax on Deansgate and I arranged a remortgage for Eddie Stuart and his Mrs, he seemed a really nice bloke but I was trying to be professional and didn’t mention I knew who he was , I wish I had done because I’m sure he’d have been chuffed to have been recognised. Anyone else got any riveting Eddie Stuart anecdotes? No? Ok then. Correction, it was Peter Jones, not Eddie Stuart. Got an Eddie one though that most if not all fans at the game missed. We played halifax at EP in our promotion season and they had player who was kicking any of our lads at every opportunity and was getting away with it. We had a corner that was cleared and my old man said watch the players running back. Then Eddie put one on the halifax player decking him which was missed by all the officials but we got justice in the end.

What was the atmosphere like around the town in 66/67? Obviously stockport looked a lot different but you get the impression from the crowds that there was some real momentum and pride around the town in County. Weird how it seemed to disappear so soon when the 70s arrived? Apart from the cup games, where did all the interest go?

I started going in 1968 so just missed the promotion season and it was bouncing, everyone seemed to be a County fan but we didn't build on our success and the fall off was dramatic, having said that football in general lost it's appeal and crowds were well down everywhere, we soon dropped back into the 4th division and all we ever seemed to hear news wise was how much of a struggle it was to keep the club afloat. During the 70s we were regularly a bottom 4 club and applied for re-election on a number of occasions, it really wasn't much fun, I'd been going home and away for over 20 years before I saw a promotion.

We got on the tails of a World Cup boost but Vic Bernard lost interest Cash dried up good players left or retired and replaced by mediocre. Ones. County had a high profile Friday night is County night Coronation Street regulars and its own train in the County Arrow. Third season in div 3 was a complete disaster. and then struggle till Danny came along.

Weird how it seemed to disappear so soon when the 70s arrived? Apart from the cup games, where did all the interest go? this is a general thing in football. Post war, all clubs saw a huge boost in attendances that lasted about 20 years or so, to the extent that a lot of clubs still have record attendance type figures from the 50s and 60s. you then had huge decline in the 70s / 80s, assorted economic crises, the rise of hooliganism, followed by Thatcher hollowing out the football heartlands of the north meant football lost its appeal. Italia 90 started the recovery, the Premier League made football trendy again, and post Covid, people have remembered the joy of actually doing stuff, rather than watching it on a black mirror.

Using good but old players to get us up was short termism, Lukic tried to put an emphasis on youth which was probably primarily to save money, but it backfired spectacularly in ‘69. Jimmy Meadows tried to replicate using experienced players when he returned in ‘74/75 like Wyn Davies, Jim McNab, Tony Coleman, Norman Lloyd etc but it completely failed and we finished 5th bottom.

Lukic's hire & fire policy when it came to managers didn't really help stabilise the club. Think we had 3 managers in one season, & were regularly finishing the season with someone different to when we'd started. We also had very little investment going into the club, so were relying on free transfers who no one else wanted, & it quickly took its toll. Lukic at one point got rid of all the other members of the board & said that he could run the club on his own, & it was only the intervention of Freddie Pye that saved us from being wound up

Third season in div 3 was a complete disaster. and then struggle till Danny came along. We were getting good gates in the season before we went up though as friday night is County night really worked at that time. The odd home game e played on saturdays showed this in attendances. What really annoyed me with Bernard was his gripes about wanting more fans into EP especially when gates under 8k were rare. It took going on to 30 years till we started to get gates like that again.
