What a season. And that's what, fifteen 1-0 victories? Just like Leeds in the seventies only we didn't play dirty.

Woods and Stuart were both 35 years old and were almost ever presents that season. They had played at the top level and football I seem to remember was played with continual aerial bombardment onto the centre forward/ centre halves head. Allchurch, Kevan and Lister were equally experienced. While football has changed you do need ability and experience.

This was one of the best times to be a County fan.It was the Go Go Go era when the club's profile and the team itself were flying high.Barry Hartle played left back in the promotion season. Both he and right back Billy Haydock were converted from wingers.
Little wonder our defence was so good, when we also had Matt Woods and Eddie Stuart in there. We have had some great centre halves over the years including Flynn,Williams,Thompson et al,but after the peerless Neil Franklin,I reckon Woods was the best.Haydock and Hartle were the outstanding wing backs (I don't think the term had been coined then),while our best conventional full back pairing, since the Staniforth days, was Betts and Webb . All in my opinion of course.

In a thread headed Jim Fryatt,I should have said my user name on here refers to Jim's head. For those too young to remember,Jim's long sideburns led to his being known as Pancho.
I remember a match when a female actor from Coronation Street(Elsie something?) was introduced to the crowd. The chant went up "Drop 'em for Pancho".
I never heard whether she did so or not.

Converted wingers..... Id forgotten that Haydock was a winger for many years, but would not have got a sniff with Allchurch and Price playing. So much experience and quality in so many positions. Players being brought in to do a short term job like Derek Kevan being swapped for Keith Allen, Shawcross being swapped for Atkins, Bert Lister. Keith East all playing some games. Peter Jones played left back as well but he was another centre half really.

Any one of the players you mention could stroll through today's so - called Championship. If I remember rightly,Frank Lord was also in the mix. Sad to see the change in fortunes.
It is also sad to reflect that some of these players have passed away. Derek Kevan left us very recently. Whilst any who saw them play is still alive, they will never be forgotten.
