Anyone remember 1967 Promotion season in old 4th division.? With Big Jim Fryatt and the other prolific scorer next to him, cannot remember his name.Meadows was manager. I remember we used to let goals in but scored more, bit like what we should be doing now with all the chances being created. We have had some big bruisers in the team in the past so managed to avoid relegation most times, not like now in freefall. Its got to stop somewhere.

I seem to remember the tall long slim forward with the lethal left foot, name Bill Atkins.

Don't think Jim played in the promotion season, he came next season to form a lethal partnership with Atkins. We were a strong defensive unit Haydock, Woods, Stuart, Hartle?) in the promotion season with Atkins,Harley,Lister,East,Kevan,Price,Shawcross getting goal. It was only the last game that ruined defensive record, losing 5 goals at home to Lincoln. Next year we became a free scoring team but without the same defensive prowess.

I remember that Jim got a mention in one of the Clough/Taylor biographies. Taylor had gone to Torquay to watch Roy Mcfarland on one of his early games and up against Jim. Based on his performance against this most tricky customer, Taylor ran to a phone box after to get Clough to sign Mcfarland up. Praise indeed for this true legend and such a prolific scorer.

I think we established a record number of 1-0 wins for a promoted team. The Lincoln match was the only game I went to that season. My Mum & Dad took me as I was only 10. We were in the paddock at the front of the Main Stand. I could barely see a thing, my head being at pitch level. Remember being utterly disappointed at the 4-5 defeat, especially as Lincoln finished bottom!

Interesting how the great defence that saw us promoted was sacrificed for an attack minded team. Did the key defenders get too old, did Fryatt And Atkins need wingers to service them with obvious results or did Victor Bernard demand attacking football. Finally why was Alan Ogley so good and how many goals would we have let in 69/70 without him. 300 my guess.

My first full season as a County fan was 1966/67 and the line was led by the likes of Frank Lord, Keith Allen, Tony Morrin, Bert Lister, Derek Kevan and Bill Atkins with Len Allchurch & Johnny Price feeding them with crosses. Our real strength that season though was the rock-solid defence (Mulhearn, Woods, Stuart, Haydock & Goodwin etc) and from memory we won a lot of games 1-0 or 2-1.
Big Jim Fryatt joined the following season (1967/68) and it was his prolific partnership with Bill Atkins that caught the headlines although it was the work of the impeccable Allchurch and Price that created so many of their chances (think Ali Gibb and Luke Beckett only better). Jim was the best header of a ball I've ever seen and he had an astonising knack of seeming to hover in the air before smacking the ball goalwards.
Happy days!

Im pretty sure they switched the team that day - just for fun because the result was meaningless - the forwards played defense and the defenders player up front -

This was our showpiece finish to a Championship winning season and we were going to put on a display in front of a large crowd. Typical of County though it didn't go according to script. I don't recall the team swapping around particularly.
