Good article, some interesting points there. I tend to disagree with those who say you can't hear the Cheadle End at all. Whenever I've sat in the other stands for games, not necessarily big or noisy games, I've always heard them. Not necessarily loud, and certainly not like being in amongst it, but I've heard them. That said some good points made about the drum and closing the upper tier. Yeah, you can definitely hear the singing, it's not totally inaudible but it's not this wall of noise that some like to paint it as. It's a handful of kids, and a couple of 30-something oddballs, singing songs far too quickly. The drum definitely needs to go, it's totally unnecessary. We didn't need it in (most of) the 90s to create a good atmosphere so we don't need it now.

Would it also save money on stewarding costs as well? Obviously it wouldn't save a significant amount but every little helps when you're in our position.

Probably not, they'd have to have stewards chasing chavs up around the top of the CE who insist on sitting there.

You're missing the point here Impy, it's one of those "we're really shit" threads, truth is the atmosphere at times is better than a good number of league clubs. I don't mind the drum either.

It wasn't meant to be a "we're really shit" thread.
It was meant to get people to make suggestions as to how we can build on what good things we have left, especially as the bigger clubs are starting to crack onto things.

With my experience of the drum....
It certainly can add to the atmosphere, but you need to use it in a tactical way. For example, County have just had a decent effort at goal and a few of the lower tier fans have jumped onto their feet and applauded the attempt. I would begin to drum and this was always a catalyst for getting the whole of the CE singing together. Then the Popside and Mainstand would usually join in and EP would be rocking.
In contrast, there are days when the drum simply isn't needed.
Now it seems that it has been passed around a few times and sometimes drowns out the few that are chanting.
