Enjoyed that, a good read. Probably been mentioned before but why not shut the Upper Tier of the Cheadle End? Everyone closer together, might improve what little atmosphere we have left?

That would make perfect sense to me.
But it would upset some who have sat there for a long time so even though I think they're wrong, it's probably best avoided.

Good stuff. However, the Clubs will do what the Premier League tells them to do. PL will just give them a bit more cash and they will be happy. Big clubs don't give a shite about fans opinions, neither do conference north clubs.

The Premier League is the clubs though isn't it? They govern themselves.
I think every club except those who are fan owned have a really poor handle on what is important to fans.
I did some work a while back where this big marketing agency were interviewed. They said one of the secrets to their success was that before they sought to act for any of their clients, they became their clients. So when they worked for a running brand, they got bang into running, lived and breathed it. They worked for a skiing brand, so spent a lot of time getting an understanding of skiing and its culture etc. Only then did they say "Right, we get it now, we'll start work on what you're paying us for". And they do very well off the back of that.
So what I'm getting at I suppose is when clubs make decisions that affect fans, the reason they get them wrong so often is because they don't bother their arse to understand what makes fans tick. Often, the people who avail themselves to clubs aren't necessarily representative of the wider fanbase too. And yet when clubs talk to these people it gives clubs the license to say "Well, we consulted with fans".

Big clubs have always "got it" they just haven't cared as the traditional fans have been a pain in the arse and their working class culture and language has not been appreciated by their new customers. However things are changing as the squeezed middle are now having to save for tuition fees etc. football has become less important to them and now the clubs have empty seats so they now need those fans they've alienated in the past and we'll start to see more and more concessions.

Maybe with decent member numbers in the Co-Op and a representative on the board, its issues like these what we could influence. Exactly what Vic was saying, even with a wealthy owner, the Co-Op still has a place!

Having never sat anywhere else since it opened I can't say. Then again you need something on the pitch to generate the atmosphere

I'd get rid of the drum as well. I was in the Vernon Stand for the Gloucester game and it drowned out any singing.
I also think without the constant beating of the drum a wider range of songs would be used.

Good article, some interesting points there.
I tend to disagree with those who say you can't hear the Cheadle End at all. Whenever I've sat in the other stands for games, not necessarily big or noisy games, I've always heard them.
Not necessarily loud, and certainly not like being in amongst it, but I've heard them.
That said some good points made about the drum and closing the upper tier.

When I used to sit in the gantry (thanks SF) I could always hear the CE, however the drum is far too loud.
I would say shut the upper tier, however the view is much different in the upper tier to the lower tier. And those who sat in the upper tier would want to sit at the back of the lower tier, so then you'd have a few conflicts and people arguing over seats.
I can't see anything like that ever happening.
