Will clubs just make players and managers redundant

clubs will be in a tough position, release assets for nothing or carry the burden

I think we'll see the prices players go for drop massively. You won't see Championship clubs getting £20m+ for players any more, I think they'll be more like £5-10m at most.

How many clubs have taken up the furlough scheme for their players?

I'd imagine most have. We definitely have.

I think it would be a breach of contract and a player could potentially walk for free if they didn't like the furlough option.

IIRC the scheme covers up to £2,500 a month so realistically you'd be looking at L2 and below

For some reason which I can't fathom, they seem to be completely absolved from any suggestion that their absurdly high wages could or should be under threat or reduced. I think I'm right that DMO's suggestion includes a 3% levy of some kind on premiership wages. 3%! Christ.

There were 10 positive tests in the Bundesliga and they've still gone ahead, I can't see these tests affecting the Premier League starting again

Never understood the criticism of footballers in the media when furlough first kicked off.

You still pay on tax whilst on furlough tbf, not that I think it is practical to expect the government to be covering obscene amounts of wages for footballers. I think a lot of footballers are going to be in for a bit of a shock in the post-covid world, as their artificially inflated wages are going to crash for a period of time as the amount of money ebbs out of football. In non-league and the lower echelons of the lower league, I don't know how playing football with empty stadiums is feasible whilst soaking up the player wage budget, even if drastically reduced. I hope to be proven wrong but I am not expecting any form of non-league football until gate receipts can be collected otherwise the cashflow problems for almost all clubs is going to be too much. I think until then the most prudent strategy for us, and indeed other clubs, is offering players a 'retainer' wage until the game can start with revenue streams for clubs to be in a position to pay wages.

Furlough has a limit of £2500 a month so the tax on that is on par with the 2p down the back of my settee in comparison to the £150k a week of a £300k a week wage.
