If we're talking closest team when we became a fan then it's County for me - Cheadle Town, Cheadle Heath Nomads, Woodley Sports, West Didsbury and Chorlton, Stockport Georgians etc...all further away than EP. Not for quite a few divisions below that do you get to a closer team, and by then it's proper amateur grassroots with no real ground setup, fan facilities, fan culture, or fan base. Grew up in the High Peak, so by distance for me would have been: Tintwistle Villa (loooooool) Glossop North End Stalybridge Celtic Some Ashton team County I was born in Stepping Hill and lived in Heaton Moor to begin with - are there any clubs geographically closer to there than County? I'm pretty certain not. At least not until you get to a very low level and the teams don't have anything that resembles a Football watching experience - i.e. no real ground, no fan base or fans, no paid entrance or gates or turnstiles, no catering, etc...etc... They may well play Saturday afternoon but that's about it. I'm in Heaton Mersey and whilst it gets down to a couple of hundred yards or so between County, Nomads, Cheadle Town - County still win out as being closest.

Probably United. Was born and grew up in Sale, never lived in Stockport nor do I have any family ties there.
Neither of my parents really liked football although my dad would watch the big games on telly like the cup final, World Cup etc. I think I’ve always loved it, can’t remember a time I wasn’t interested, so my dad bought me a few United kits when I was little. Think the last one I had was the 95/96 one that had the ground image on the shirt but I was well into County by then and barely wore it.
I went to a few United games when I was younger, my first one was against Palace at Old Trafford the night Dion Dublin broke his leg and at the time thought it was great but going to County blew me away. God knows why as it was a cold Friday night in December and we lost to Plymouth.
Last United game I went to was the Champions League semi against AC Milan in 2007, United won 3-2. Had players like Kaka, Pirlo, Rooney on the pitch but I was bored shitless. Think United scored twice in the last 5 mins to win and even when the third went in I barely bothered standing up. It didn’t mean anything.

I supported United and County until I was about 9/10 as that’s who most of my mates supported. Went to a couple of games at OT.
Also, could’ve been City. My dad went regularly until the 80s. Took me to quite a few games at Maine Rd under Alan Ball and Brian Horton. But his interest had waned and I was going to County more and more frequently. They ended up being a client of mine for 2.5 years so got quite a few freebies back then. Still go a couple of times a season with my Dad now but that’s more for a day on the beer around town.

Great thread, this.
For me it was always County - my first experience of a live football match was at EP. Had it been up to my dad, I'd have ended up being a United fan, but I was just never interested in them. It's because of my (maternal) Grandpa that I ended up a County fan. Coronavirus allowing, we still go to matches together now.

My dad brainwashed me into following County from a very early age and I have done the same with my kids 😂

Never really an option, as a kid in Adswood it was County or get a slap.

My dad brainwashed me into following County from a very early age and I have done the same with my kids 😂 Same. I took my daughter at 7 weeks and my lad at 13 days 😎. Luckily with my lad (middle name Alun 😍) it was the Barnet game in March, the last home game we could go to, otherwise he’d still be waiting.

Born down South, but moved to Preston before I could even walk or talk. My old man started taking me to Deepdale when I was about 4, together with a box he'd made for me to stand on. Loved the game and became a regular until his job moved him to Ashton and we moved To Heaton Mersey. I was about 6 or 7 at the time and excited at the prospect of supporting United. My Dad took me together with the box, but the box wasn't allowed in so my experience at Old Trafford was just being able to make out the Keepers legs at one end of the ground. Hated it. Went to City and sat down so saw the game but was very meh about the whole experience. Finally my Dad took me to County one Friday night and that was that, hook line and sinker. Still have a soft spot for Preston as a result. If I had stayed in the South longer than 6 months, on closest teams it would probably have been Spurs.

I owe my love of the club to my Dad who took me to games as a teenager and an FA Cup tie that never was. I don’t shy away from the fact that I actually grew up supporting Liverpool and only became a County fan in 1994 after the two clubs had been set to meet at Edgeley Park in an FA Cup 4th round match. The potential tie with Liverpool was made all ticket for fans and so I attended a couple of League matches at Edgeley Park before the tie so that I could be sure of getting a ticket. Bristol City caused a major upset in the Cup that year as they beat Liverpool 1-0 in a replay at Anfield and so my hopes of seeing the Reds live disappeared. Despite the fact that I had missed out on the chance to see Liverpool in action I had enjoyed my experience of live football that much that I quickly became hooked on County and started going home and away.

My dad brainwashed me into following County from a very early age and I have done the same with my kids 😂 you are certainly not alone there. my old man loved train travel and if there had not been a direct train to stockport at the time i may have ended up supporting someone else. knowing my luck it would have been bradford park avenue or accrington stanley.

I was born in a coalyard with 6 fingers on each hand, but never really enjoyed the football at Turf Moor.
We were literally one big family there, though.
The NHS OP to remove the extra fingers worked and stopped me smoking a cigarette and picking my nose at the same time with the same hand.
After that,it was County for me.

I’m one of few who will admit to changing team as an adult.
Supported Spurs as a young kid (family team as both parents were regulars there in the 60s/70s)
went to watch games at non league Enfield as a teenager, so they became my team, until they went out of business when I was off at university
Kind of half-arsedly went back to Spurs, but not really that bothered, particularly as my job involved dealing with top level football agents at the time, who were just as bad as reputation suggests, really putting me off the top level game.
Moved to Stockport for my wife’s work in 2004 (absolutely no family connections here, and we could have ended up moving just about anywhere in the country) went to my first County game in 2005, and hooked during the escape from relegation under JG that season.
I could easily be one of many who follow Spurs on tv, but probably would now be supporting Cheltenham / Partick Thistle / Alty if we’d ended up moving somewhere else than Stockport.

City sadly.
A good mate Bernard, at Longdendale, was a huge fan. He and his dad took me to Ewood when City beat them 1-0 to win promotion. It was mental. I didn't actually like it. I would have been about 14 and it scared the shit out of me. Plus, I just couldn't see anything.
Fortunately my ex-wife in later years had a good friend worked in the ticket office at County who gave me and my son free tickets and we were hooked immediately. Up until then though I was probably more favoured to City. Although by then I'd got into the drums and bands so football went on a backburner really between school and my late 30s.
