I absolutely cannot wait for tonight. Bradford was always one of my favourite away grounds as a kid (and still is to be honest). I can vividly remember the excitement driving over the Pennines with my dad, eating sandwiches whilst listening to the radio, heading for a proper football ground steeped in history and with a brilliant away end. The fact County won at Valley Parade six times in the 90s heightens those nostalgic feelings, too. I’m sure I’ll see many of the 2,000 travelling Hatters later on – loads of photos needed for this one! In the meantime, we’ve got Jon Keighren, Ian Brown and Nick Lee with your Bradford build-up. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/bradford-v-county

We’ll take a look at the Bradford game tomorrow, although there’s 37 photos from my trip to West Yorkshire last night for you to peruse today. Saturday’s main feature is the penultimate article from my Great Big Review of 2023. It’s November today, as County equal Luton’s record winning run in League Two. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/des-juniors-great-big-review-of-2023-cda

County’s final game of 2023 (after a 6.15pm pitch inspection) was a 0-0 draw at Bradford on Friday night. Yours truly and The City Gent editor Mike Harrison reflect on the Valley Parade stalemate – our third consecutive draw against the Bantams. You’ve also got the final part of my Great Big Review of 2023. County won 8-0 against Sutton, but got knocked out of the FA Cup by a non-league side. It’s been a mixed month. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/bradford-0-county-0

Happy New Year everybody! 🥳 How’s your hangover? I’m sure many Hatters and Stags will be feeling sleepy and sluggish at Edgeley Park this afternoon. That’s not a luxury afforded to the 22 players, however. As my ex-girlfriend once said* to me: “This is a big one.” Let’s get straight down to business. Ian Brown and Andrew Barlow join us for our first match preview of 2024, and we’ve also got contributions from Mansfield fans Sam Binch and Craig Priest, who both seem like they’d be fairly happy to take a point back to Nottinghamshire this afternoon. Unbeaten over Christmas, I don’t think a point would be a bad result for County today in terms of the automatic promotion race. Win, however, and I really believe we can start to dream of seeing Stockport County clinch a Football League championship for the first time since 1966-67. *After I bought her a kebab from Mustaph’s thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/county-v-mansfield-1ba

Today might feel like a slog for lots of Hatters, so I thought I’d leave the 2-0 defeat for now. Instead, let’s have… actually we do have to sit through a 2-0 defeat today as we’re looking back at Wigan away. John K Bilsbury, Kev Richardson and Eddie Powell share their away day tales from a very cold DW Stadium. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/pickled-onions-for-breakfast-ironic

I think most people still believe County v Mansfield will be a League One fixture next season, with both sides going up automatically, but the title race might be starting to get a little bit interesting. The Stags go top if they beat Crewe on Saturday. Nigel Clough’s men completed the double over County on New Year’s Day. Dave Philbin and Sam Binch from Mansfield Musings reflect on the opening game of 2024. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/county-0-mansfield-2

You can blame County for losing at home to Aldershot, or have a go at Gillingham for beating Charlton, but the fact of the matter is that we don’t have a game this weekend. (And even worse, we’ll probably be knocked off the top of League Two by Mansfield this afternoon.) With a blank Saturday in the diary, in terms of our usual County content, I thought I’d spend some time catching up with a number of our advertisers from the last year, to reflect on 2023 whilst also looking forward to the next 12 months. As always, if you’re ever in need of a particular product or service, have a look at The Scarf My Father Wore directory first to see if we can assist you, before you use Google or Yell.com. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/a-january-catch-up-with-some-of-our

Back in November, Jack Isherwood wrote a superb feature for The Scarf My Father Wore after returning from Japan, where he’d enjoyed fantastic hospitality from our Tokyo Hatters. For his first piece of 2024, Jack’s the latest County fan to answer a load of questions in our ‘Meet the Subscribers’ series. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/i-always-tell-my-girlfriend-county
