You can’t get anything other than vegan food when you watch a game at Forest Green. Yesterday, you couldn’t even witness the home team having a shot on target. And today, I haven’t been able to find anyone to speak to from Nailsworth. We do have County fan Dan Levy in the building, though, who was in Gloucestershire for County’s easy 3-0 victory on Good Friday, which takes us back to the top of League Two, courtesy of Wrexham beating Mansfield. Five wins from seven games mathematically takes us up now, four would almost certainly be enough, and maybe even three. We’re nearly there, anyway. Colin McPherson has also written a piece for us today, one of three photographers whose excellent images feature in a new book from When Saturday Comes, which you can pre-order now ahead of the May 1st release date. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/forest-green-0-county-3

What do you get if you cross two Hatters with a Womble? The answer is today’s match preview from Ian Brown, Ed Chadwick and Ray Armfield. I appreciate that punchline is more factual than funny, but any humour within me has drained away after seeing various April Fools’ Day efforts on social media this morning. I’ll simply see you all at Edgeley Park, where you can get a crocodile sandwich in the County Courtyard today, plus a snog off Michelle Keegan if you buy a half-time draw ticket. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/county-v-afc-wimbledon

As you know, I enjoy publishing regular County content for County fans, and Stockport stuff for Stopfordians, but I like to cater for The Football Family too. That’s what we’re doing today, with an extract from Euro 1984, the brand new book from Aidan Williams which is scheduled for release on 22 April. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/euro-1984

I’m not heading down to London today unfortunately, but for those Hatters currently heading south on trains and coaches, we’ve got a bumper edition for you today. Andrew Barlow, Jonathan Baker, Ian Brown and Ed Chadwick share their thoughts ahead of another huge game in the promotion hunt, and we’re also joined by Dan from Gandermonium. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/sutton-v-county

Three points at Colchester on Tuesday night, coupled with a Mansfield defeat at home to Forest Green, and Dave Challinor’s men are mathematically in the third tier next season. Of course, win, and we’re practically up anyway with our superior goal difference, but we’d have to wait until Morecambe at home on Saturday to see the ‘P’ on the league table, and possibly even the ‘C’ on the same day… For now though, let’s put the permutations to one side, and just enjoy County’s fourth win on the bounce. John K Bilsbury was in the away end at Gander Green Lane yesterday afternoon, with Dan from Gandermonium joining us once again for the Sutton view. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/sutton-1-county-3

Can’t be arsed trawling through to see if it’s already been mentioned.. but a shout out to the stewards at Sutton.. if Carlsberg did stewards 😉.. they were great and should write the training manual (nobody needs to say it was an easy day for them.. their attitude was right from the first contact).

It’s surely only a matter of time before our promotion to League One is confirmed (we’re 1/1000 with the bookies before County fans start having a go at me for tempting fate!), at which point I’m sure we’ll have loads of special articles and photos on The Scarf My Father Wore, but until then it’s business as usual, and today we’ve got another instalment of our ‘20 Questions’ series. It’s Wolverhampton Wanderers today, who County haven’t played in the league since 2001-02 (although their kids did visit EP in the Pizza Cup in September 2022). Thomas Baugh, editor of Wolves Blog, joins us for a chat. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/20-questions-wolverhampton-wanderers

National League North champions 2018-19. National League champions 2021-22. And if County win at Colchester tonight, a third promotion in six seasons could be secured, if Mansfield lose at home to Forest Green as well. We’d also be on the brink of the League Two title. After administration, relegation out of the Football League, and then 11 years in the non-league wilderness, these are remarkable times in Stockport at the moment. And very bloody enjoyable! I hope County fans are dancing on the pitch tonight, Stopfordians are celebrating in the pubs, and I’m sure lots of The Football Family will also be glad to see a proper, traditional, community club continue their upward trajectory. Ian Brown joins us today ahead of tonight’s big game. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/colchester-v-county-677

Forget the market, forget staying at home, forget the roast beef, all ten of County’s little piggies are going on a League One tour! Nine of them are already tucking into the peanuts and miniature bottles of vodka on the plane. There’s one little piggy still having their passport checked, but they’ll be boarding any moment now. In other words, we’re going up! It’s not mathematically done and dusted just yet, but County would have to lose all of their remaining games about 4-0, with MK Dons winning all of theirs by a similar scoreline. Even Stockport County couldn’t cock this up from here… A hard-fought 2-1 victory at Colchester last night has all but sealed County’s return to the third tier next season, for the first time since 2009-10. Jon Waldron was at the match for the Daily Gazette, whilst Hannah Brown was one of the Hatters in the away end who got to experience a very special County moment at the final whistle. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/colchester-1-county-2

Rob Fielding, editor of One Vale Fan, joins us today for the latest instalment in our ‘20 Questions’ series. Will we see Rob back on The Scarf My Father Wore for our League One season preview in July? As it stands, no we won’t. However, the Valiants are only in the relegation zone on goal difference, and three of their last four games are at home, so we might yet still see ‘em next season. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/20-questions-port-vale

There’s not much from me today as I’m surrounded by Citeh fans on the Chester to Manchester train (they’ve got Luton at home… come on the other Hatters!) and I’m losing the will to live. I’ll leave you in the capable hands of Ian Brown for today’s edition, and if County are in League One by teatime, I promise you’ll get a ton of photos and articles from myself over the next few days! thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/county-v-morecambe
