One of the heartwarming moments for expatriates is to see a grid cover with the words "Needhams of Stockport" on it.
Do Needhams still exist?
Where were they based before they conquered the world of drain covers?

The foundry was in Portwood and closed in 1979.

I'm another one, I try to photograph any interesting cast iron I see, especially Needham's stuff. An interest I share with Jeremy Corbyn, apparently.

They had two foundries. Newbridge Lane and Carrington Lane. A lot of the buildings are still there on Carrington Lane, industrial units now.

Yes indeed, among the current users are some erstwhile colleagues of mine from Mirrlees who refurbish diesel engines for the railway and various other customers.

You can add me to the list of draincover fanciers. During lockdown I took to repeating the exact same walk round the neighbourhood after work every day, and found myself, as a way of noticing new details within the unchanging environment, developing a keen interest in the variety of cast iron to be found by the curious street-level gaze. I came to recognise Needham's as a mark of quality. There's a particularly fine example right outside my house.

Used to play marbles in the school playground grids back in the day, 10 marbles were all that was allowed to stop trouble with people losing the lot.

When I lived in Norwich I went down to Roots Hall a few times to watch County at Southend. I remember being struck by just about every grid cover in the town bearing the Needham Stockport label - must have been a pretty big enterprise.
