When I went to visit grandparents in Luton I had a glow of pride at the Needhams drain grills on the way to the corner shop

Add me to this list too.
I've seen grids in Cambridge, Lewes and Brighton to name a few.
Always gives me, probably too much joy, seeing these grids in random locations to the point i stand there looking like an idiot taking pictures of it!
NEEDHAMS = MASSIVE

When I lived in Pitsea, Basildon we had a couple outside our house. I took great pride at pointing them out to Mrs Malc! 😋

There's lots here in Edinburgh too. Seems they cornered the market in drain covers.

Wonder what went wrong?
Did the bottom fall out of the drain cover market?
Cheap and nasty foreign imports?

Wonder what went wrong? Did the bottom fall out of the drain cover market? Cheap and nasty foreign imports? Pretty much. We deal a lot with castings and as you say, majority of covers & gratings are imported from India & China.

 They apparently went under in 1979 though, probably German efficiency what did for our drain covers in them days

NEEDHAMS = MASSIVE I've taken pictures of them in Stockport, so you probably don't have to feel like you're being overly eccentric there! You're very much among likeminded souls... at least on this thread.

I Knew there was a reason I always looked at Stockport results as a kid in the 70s & not some random pick a town team , as mentioned marbles at school in East London , the things you forget until you infiltrate other MB's !

They had them in Lyme Regis too, which always caught my eye on childhood holidays.

Not the same Needham, but I recently learned that Col Needham, the founder and CEO of IMDB is from Stockport. Probably related to these Needhams.

Was in Mombasa about 10 years ago and plenty of Needhams grids around the capital.
