Lad I work with who is a wildlife photographer in his spare time snapped a picture of a beecatcher (rare in uk) last week and had about 50 twitchers descend on the spot within 10 minutes. Stunning looking bird, like a large version of a kingfisher....................see loads of them in Cyprus.

I've just returned to the UK after living in Cyprus for almost 5 years. Bee Eaters arrive there late March from Africa and return in October. There are two types Blue Cheeked Bee Eater and Eurasion Bee Eater. And it is the Eurasion Bee Eater that arrived in Norfolk last year, bred and have returned again this year. Another sign that temperatures are rising.

Did you see that supervet, Noel Fitzpatrick on the telly box this week? He had a dog that had been run over and had its back broken so the operation he required rendered his hind legs as useless. Noel made him a contraption on wheels that lifted the animals back legs high off the ground so he could get around on just his front legs and the trolley contraption. The dog looked so happy chasing around after his owners. Not much brings a tear to my eye but that did. That guy is an animal genius. Are you sure you weren’t watching “Colin from Accounts”?

Dogs can actually learn to walk on two limbs. Incredible but true. Three legs hardly even hinders them. Incredible creatures. They can learn to adapt and live with most things. I've just had my daughter's Springer Spaniel for two weeks, they might be incredible but it's convinced my wife that we don't want one, lovely little thing in lots of ways but hard work. Massively hard work and a huge commitment if you're a responsible owner. We lost our 17 year old border collie last year and don't want another one not least as we're now enjoying that lack of full on commitment. I get asked a lot "do you want another dog?". I usually respond with "no, I want the dog back we lost".

Depends which ones though, surely? If there's a dog out there who can walk with just one left front leg and one left back leg then I need to see it. Runs round in large circles. Joking apart I'd be staggered if a dog would not learn itself how to balance and walk on two legs on same side. But I've seen a dog walk on two front legs and that pretty much made me realise that nothing is impossible for them.

It would appear those wheel contraptions are far more common than I knew about. Brilliant that Martin. And yes, you're right. Animals do bring out the big, soft b'stard inside me. Most humans don't.

He's the subject of 'Toxic' by Britney Spears. True story.

When one of ours die we usually get another within a week even if we have to travel further than expected to a rescue centre for the one we want. You never forget your old dog but the new one will give you loads more happiness and new memories whilst you have them. As a vet once said to me there is a dog for everyone and everyone for a dog and its easier to find one that fits than a human partner.

We've had around 30 fosters through here in the last 20 odd years, three of which we adopted long term and lived to 16/17 (we only foster/adopt older dogs). After our last one we both sort of figured and came to terms with the idea that we'd done our bit and neither have the emotional capacity to go through it again. But I reckon another year or so from now we might waver.
