Just where and how did these things come here in the first place.
nobody quite knows, but the most likely theory is that there were enough escapees from private aviaries over the years, with numbers increasing significantly around the time of the 1987 hurricane in the south east to support a breeding population.
Another theory (possibly more of an urban myth) is that when 'The African Queen' was filmed in Pinewood in the 50s, a lot of birds were just released into the wild at the end of filming, and they've spread from there. There's a less believable version along the same lines based around it all stemming from just 2 birds released by Jimi Hendrix in 60s London.
Many years ago there was an aviary in Avondale Park and the word on the street was that someone broke into it one night and everything escaped and these birds survived and thrived, I was in Spain recently and saw lots of parrots I was told that they'd bred from just a few random escapees, others say it was a deliberate attempt to introduce them but no-one has take responsibility.

There was a similar story about an aviary in Alexandra Park and a thriving colony of escapees. And then a cold winter about thirty years back finished them off.

Are the Mandarin Ducks still living at Etherow, does anyone know? last I saw, autumn 2022, there were mandarins at Etherow and on the Goyt.Apparently the mandarin is Stockports bird Each town in GM has one representative bird and the mandarin was chosen for Stockport. Quite often seen them at Etherow, sometimes by the weir.Last year the ones at Woodbank had young. What has salford got. Some breed of vulture.

Who wants to be the head of twitching. All twitchers are birdwatchers but not all birdwatchers are twitchers. Definition of a twitcher-birdwatcher who goes to see a bird other people have found (usually an uncommon or rare one)

Or muntjac deer, get them in my garden, stocky little buggers Loads of muntjac deer around here in Cambridgeshire. We also have a population of black squirrels. Apparatently they are grey squirrels with a genetic mutation that gives them black fur. There is at least one in the village with a bright white tip on its tail which makes it looks like a cross between a squirrel and a skunk.

Bats are back in the back garden tonight (a pipperstrel, spelling, nearly hit me in the head but missed my glass and my head) and some bigger ones were batting about. They are amazing and would give a Usain Bolt/Kominech combo a run for their money the way they dart about at super speed and never hit anything. Anyhoo, C'mon County tomorrow near Worksop or I may start to get annoyed with the situation! Not bothered about any Dung or Sheff just start preforming in the league and I will be happier. Oh and Bredders seems to have become dragonfly central (have not seen one for years but at a family gathering last weekend saw two and seen three at casa FB in the last three days). I O County!

As you may have seen on the news, here in Southern Europe we've had a very prolonged period of very hot weather. It was cool enough last evening for me to take one of our dogs out on a walk. This particular dog loves splashing about in the river so that's where I took him. However, it's all but dried up now. There are still one or two puddles left though and approaching one, several things jumped out of one. On closer inspection, I discovered they were really tiny frogs. I guess they lay eggs - I think frogs lay eggs 🤷♂️ - in these small, muddy puddles and when the rains return and the river flows again, they hatch.
