Stopped in Cambridge on the way home, had a great night. Defo one for the purists/unhinged if driving there and back in a day though. Did this trip to the old ground in my pick up truck many moons ago, motorway was screwed so we went cross country with my mate reading the map, took us 5 1/2 hours got there with 10 mins to spare and just enough time for my expert navigator to chug a pint before going in, seem to recall it going off outside the pub. Drove there and back for the two midweek games at Layer Rd in 2004 (lost both of them). Could manage 9/10 hour drives in a day back then, I’d never walk again if I tried that now. As I say, little stopover somewhere an hour outside Colchester on the Saturday night is just the ticket.

When we lived in Ipswich (15 miles from Colchester) we used to do EP and back in the day but after a while we would stop over on the Saturday night and drive back Sunday. There and back in one day was knackering to say the least. It's OK occasionally but too often is a turn off. The A14 and M6 is boring as hell so we'd stop at the same services (Huntingdon near Cambridge and Corley near Coventry). Corley is 100 miles from Stockport whilst Huntingdon is halfway between Corley and Ipswich. Tried to treat the trip as 3 separate journeys each way. Psychological maybe but it worked for me.

I tend to take the A1, get on at Worksop, only slightly less boring mind.

The problem used to be the congestion at all the roundabouts between Worksop and Peterborough. 10 years since I've driven on that section of the A1. Back then new sections of road had recently been built to by pass the roundabouts.

And further north too, taking the Ferrybridge roundabout out and the improvements made north of there have made a huge difference, still needs sorting out south of Berwick, but the A1's massively improved

Travelling regularly from Stockport to Cambridge , I generally found the quickest route was via the A50.
From Stockport, either down the M6 to Stoke and then A50 to the M1, or the scenic route via Macc & Leek and pick up the A50 on the eastern side of Stoke.
It is dual carriageway all the way to the M1 with just a couple of roundabouts.
Another option is cross country via Chesterfield, Mansfield and Newark to pick up the A1. It is a bit of a slog though on single carriageway roads to the A1.

All the roundabouts between Newark and Huntingdon were removed a few years ago, so it is pretty straight run if the traffic is OK. There is also a new three lane stretch of the A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge that has removed most of the congestion on that stretch.

Think it just goes to show, if you’re not travelling to/from London, you might as well forget it.

There used to be a number of speed cameras on that A14 stretch but do not know if they have been removed since those improvements. On a good day its an easy journey with most duel carriageway and motorway if you use the M6 and then A14. Its just a long way back after a defeat where you feel you,ll never going to get back home.

I had it on very good authority there was a problem with those cameras and they never worked, last time I went down the new section there weren’t any.

There are lots of cameras along the new three lane stretch between Huntingdon and Cambridge, along with a variable speed limit. Going past Cambridge there is a stretch with average speed cameras. These do help to keep traffic moving at busy times, compared to the old stretch of road which was a 16 mile long crawl at rush hour. There are also odd cameras at different points along the A14.
