If Barry had stayed fit, he wouldn’t have been with us come January. Only have to look at Joe Taylor who got bumped up to a League 1 loan by Luton. I honestly don't think that would of been the case with Barry. He'd already had 4 loan spells at different clubs (2 in league 1) without tearing up any trees, his period where he was fit & playing for us was probably his most successful period of his playing career so far in terms of goals & the impact he was making. I think Villa would of been content to let him continue & build his confidence & develop in a side where he was doing well rather than disrupt his momentum by sending him to a league 1 side in January where he'd have to get to know another set of players, tactics, style etc, & start from scratch again in the middle of the season.

Safe journey to all those travelling down tonight, there was a time I'd have been there but I just can't face 5 hour coach journies and getting home at 2.30 anymore, I'm just not built for long coach trips.

Only have to look at Joe Taylor who got bumped up to a League 1 loan by Luton. we would of been able to keep him because we would of been able to pay more for Barry wage than Colchester and Taylor. We could also say that Barry had found his form that he didn't manage at other clubs and the last time he was recalled from league 2 to go league 1 it didn't work out so it will of been better for him to stay aaaaarrrrrggghhh my brain

These kids are stock piled and are just pieces of meat in a system. It’s not about what’s right for the player anymore. Look at how many players were recalled in leagues 1 and 2. He’d have gained more value for them if he could have got game time in league 1 or championship and there would definitely have been interest in him if he’d carried on his form.

Both in terms of his development and his value. Anyways, it’s not something we had to worry about. Hopefully we get 5/6 games out of him.

Thank you!! 😁 Although he’d have is actually correct as well! 🤣

Get where your coming from but he'd already had game time in league 1 without any degree of success, like matbot says above, a full season scoring 20 goals in a successful league 2 side would bump his value up far more than half a successful season at 1 level & a potentially not as successful half a season a level above. If he hadn't already been tried at league 1 level twice then I think your scenario would have likely played out. I'm hoping he'll get decent league 1 experience with us in another loan spell next season & if so & he carries on performing like he did then yes, I could see Villa thinking 'let's step him up to championship level' mid loan.

Why don’t we all just surrender and join the ‘would of’ brigade?

Why don’t we all just surrender and join the ‘would of’ brigade? Also, why don’t we spend another 5 pages debating a hypothetical question which will literally never be resolved because we can’t go back in time? There are so many possibilities…
