Anyone else just sing the title of this thread to the tune of Slade's "My Friend Stan"?
Love that though. Saw the result on Flashscore on Satdee and saw the 96th minute timing and knew it would have been special. f*ck off Franchise.

I don't like Wimbledon either. Hate all the crazy gang stuff, their fans have never come across particularly well to me. Obviously awful what happened with MK Dons, no question about that but in terms of phoenix clubs they had it easier than anybody else due to media exposure. It's no wonder they barnstormed through the divisions. I was pleased they did. that isn't why I don't particularly like them. It seems it's on the football fans conscience to feel for Wimbledon and root for them more than other teams who went through difficulties. Wimbledon wouldn't give a f*ck about us when we swimming through shit in the National League North. They don't give a f*ck about Bury etc.
Great result that they beat MK Dons on Saturday but I was most pleased because it was a good result for County.

I watched the game and the commentator was very good throughout the match, and that was ace at the end I like the way they consistently referred to “the opposition” when referring to the club and “opponent” when referring to a player. At one point a sub came on and the main commentator said something along the lines of: opponent coming on once scored a hat trick here for the opposition: Portsmouth.

AFC Wimbledon aren’t perfect and squeaky clean, and they have plenty of wrong’uns among their fanbase. I like them more for what they represent than them as a club specifically. They’re a fan owned club who have prospered despite money people in football saying that Wimbledon couldn’t sustain a football league club. Their success is a great up yours to people who think that way about fans and fanbases. For that reason alone I will always wish them well especially when they play against the club that shouldn’t exist. Every time they get one over on the fake Dons it is a win for real football fans everywhere. Even if they have some divs who support them. If the original Wimbledon had just gone bump instead of having their league position stolen then they wouldn’t have nearly the wider footballing support that they do. You can divorce how they came about from why they get the support that they do - no other club has had something like that happen to them and thanks to the backlash nobody ever will again.

This is not to say I don’t get disliking them, they do have some divs who I’ve witnessed first hand. It’s more what they represent that I like more than anything else. Probably helps my perspective that they’re a relatively local club to me as well and in another universe I could have grown up a Wimbledon fan (in a world without County).

Pretty much my thoughts too. There’s a great audio doc on the whole story here that’s well worth a listen open.spotify.com/episode/4RmWoGbncMinBPvpxThB2H?si=uM_-GOqoRdu49WlAFAsZTQ

I don't mean this as a rant directed specifically at you, atmosphere, but that line about "wouldn't give a f*ck about us" exemplifies a pernicious and toxic thought pattern that I often see in political debates, especially on places like Twitter. It revolves around creating an imaginary scenario, then deciding how other people who you don't know will feel about it. You then decide that all of them would feel unsympathetic and use that to justify not caring about them. Rather than just basing your moral reaction to something on, well, what you think is right and will create a kinder, more humane world. It's a weird mixture of "don't give a f*ck, me" and created victimhood. Feels closely related to the "well, X thing was bad for me in the past, so why should I vote for a party that ensure others don't suffer like I did now?" attitude. Not that I'm saying your offhand comment means you're guilty of all the above, but I do think it's not the best way to approach things (and it's something that I've certainly sometimes been guilty of too - it's easy to slip into).

I didn't say I didn't feel for them for the MK Dons stuff but doesn't mean I have to like them automatically. I take people or things as I find them, never really enjoyed my trips to Wimbledon, didn't like their team or fans and hated the Crazy Gang team for their thuggish antics. I never said I don't give a f*ck what happened to them or that I was unsympathetic. If anything it's my sympathy for a lot of other clubs who have had to start phoenix clubs (I know none are in the same circumstances) that lead me to my view point that other people just seem to care or cared about Wimbledon.

The combination of slightly holier-than-thou and their part in doing over Kingstonian never sits quite right.
Basic cause of both clubs problems is that land in London is far more valuable for housing than a not that well supported football team, and the lack of governance/ willingness to embrace dodgy characters means it’s far easier than it should be to prise club and ground apart.

Yeah, it’s fair to say that they got more attention than other phoenix clubs, mostly because they were one of the first high profile ones and because what happened felt particularly egregious. Whether that meant other people cared less about other ones or whether it raised the profile or the issue, I don’t know. The Crazy Gang was a bit before my time, so don’t hold a strong opinion on them one way or the other. Though I can definitely believe that the underdog element might have been overshadowed by the thuggish one.
