For us to have a population thrice that of Spain, ours would have to be 138 million, ie 46 million x 3. Given the figures you have stated (UK 63 million, Spain 46 million), ours is 37% higher. No I think you were correct to be fair. Spain's population is more or less 2/3rds of ours. But our population, by those figures, is pretty much exactly 150% of their's, therefore "50% higher" Its 37% higher Martin, not that close to 50% at all. Glad you're not calculating my premiums

I agree it's too early, I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing with the exception of seeing my mum and dad at an appropriate distance in their garden instead of the end of the drive because it's my dad's birthday, other than that I'll keep to my property with the exception of daily exercise.
It's quite ridiculous how the about turn has come this week, they must be daft to think we don't know it's related to that Cummings fella.

Spain is about 3 times the size of Briain. This Briain sounds like a right fat b*stard.

So how many fires will there be on the moors this weekend? Idiots just think lockdown is over and will litter the countryside with rubbish they expect someone else to pickup

It’s all trial and error. There’s a lot of folk out there socialising without bothering with social distancing. Loads of kids playing out with their mates etc. I think the 98% figure for people maintaining social distancing that was given in last nights update is way off the mark.
A few weeks back in the Boris conference where he introduced the R and the various phases it was made clear that if we saw any spikes in cases and/or deaths then we’d take a step back.
In Germany they’ve got salons/barbers open, they’ve got bars open

I think the easing is ok. But people need to stick to social distancing and hand washing, otherwise we'll have another cycle of lockdown. Oh, and people need to stop saying that people can't be blamed for not sticking to the rules because of Cummings. There is no free pass.

A lot aren’t already and people are going to become even more casual. I know it should be simple for everyone to remember but the I don’t think the washing hands message had been drummed home enough as measured have been relaxed.

This chap has got it spot on.
There will be an increase in infection rates as a result of the way the lockdown is being eased, according to a scientist who belongs to a group which advises the UK government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage).
Prof Robert West, who is part of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Behaviours but is speaking in a personal capacity, says the government is "not taking its responsibilities for political leadership seriously" and the easing poses "a huge risk".
"This should not be treated as a political crisis but as a health crisis. If you treat it as a political crisis it's all about managing your reputation, if you treat it as a health crisis it's about saving lives," he says.
Asked about the impact of the lockdown conduct of the PM's top aide Dominic Cummings, he says trust in authority will become "even more important" when restrictions apply to some people but not others.

Roll on the second wave. I am back from my daily exercise in New Brighton and can’t believe what I have just witnessed. No qualms with anybody taking on the new rules two days before they come into effect, and the local Wirral populace have certainly done that regarding the number within a gathering. However, they don’t seem to have heard about the second part of the rule! Out the 100 or so (soon to be legitimately sized) gatherings I saw, only a handful were social distancing. i started to get used to this when I came across the mother of all flouting where a group of about 15 young adults in a sort of huddle - see photo. Incredibly I came across several groups of similar size before getting the hell out of there. As this is likely to be reflected throughout the country, a second wave sort of seems inevitable. The lack of any police presence anywhere in the town smacks of an acceptance that a large chunk of the population cannot count to 6 so we’ll just let them get on with it.

Britain's population isn't 50% higher than Spain's. 63M (last time I looked) vs 46M. Spain is about 3 times the size of Briain and has nowhere near the population density. In answer to your question though. Yes. Far too early. Many of us here, myself included want flights from Britain to remain suspended. We haven't gone through the lock down we've gone through - and are still going through (masks compulsory in supermarkets) only for people to come here from countries where some (not all) of the population have been behaving very irresponsibly. The Cummings factor is very much in play here now. I hate to say this and I hope I'm wrong, but if the predicted 2nd wave does come, you ain't seen nothing yet. Stay safe peeps. Surprisingly, Spain is only twice the size of the UK in landmass terms. The UK is much more heavily densely populated though: 701 people/sq m, vs 238 people/sq m.

Spain is a weird one when it comes to density though. It’s got huge areas where pretty much nobody lives, including several of the least populated regions in Europe (parts of Aragon compare to Siberia in terms of density) so pretty much everyone lives in dense towns and cities, rather than rural villages. The U.K. figure is very different from the English density figure too - it’s areas like the Welsh borders / Scottish Highlands that account for most of our empty space. There have been groups of 30+ teenagers near me for the past week. The police are too scared to break them up. I’ve seen numerous BBQs on Instagram today with no social distancing whatsoever.
