Listening to Suella Braverman this morning. A question I've always had. Why is it that Conservatives think they have the monopoly on loving their country? It's incredibly arrogant. The card they always play on TV. There are different ways to love your country and it aint just about its politics, its establishment elected and unelected or how many flags you wish to wave.

It was basically about his plans for the place that were supported by people in the town that were scuppered by a council leader who was a post man or ex postman. Substitute davidson for someone you like or come back when they put their noses into your life or something you have vast experiance on with their rules, regulations and even a dislike of the person involved and sod what others want also. If for one reason they scupper our ground redevelopment for some minor reason i doubt people will feel as warm to local government then. That doesn't tell me why it happened. Just how. It's the why that matters here. Bloody hell pal i have slept since then and its 14 years since i left the area with no wish to ever go back. Know it was something to do with a change of use somewhere down the line but if i can get the full info i,ll PM you if you are interested.

It's the why that matters here. Seems pretty clear to me in the local paper article? He got a money from the council on a promise of attracting big acts. He couldn’t attract the acts, so the council asked for their money back. JD sold his stake in the pier, paid off the council, and made a decent wedge on top. Diddums. County, in the other hand, have been at or very near capacity for large parts of the last season if you hadn’t noticed. Assuming your concern is that plans for expanding the ground might be construed as overoptimistic by any councillors minded to reject them?

Being proud of your country, doesn't mean you have to hate everyone else. You can be left wing and patriotic at the same time. Like myself. White, Christian, ex armed forces and a Socialist. The right wing do not hold the monopoly on this.

The London Olympics was the last time I felt really proud of my country, I think the world saw the best of us then and we could have built on that but we decided on a different route.

No idea what the story is about Davidson but if he was bothered about being subject to the rules others also have to abide by and the democracy which is inherently part of British life, perhaps he should go and find another country to live in. It was basically about his plans for the place that were supported by people in the town that were scuppered by a council leader who was a post man or ex postman. If it's planning, then feel free to post details. I'm on home ground there. Either way, are you arguing against local councils? They will always make decisions that split opinion, as will happen with EP. They're accountable at the ballot box.

Hang on, shouldn’t we find out what Jason Manford thinks about EP expansion before we rule out putting planning decisions in the hands of comedians?

Great idea, I'm sure his son will tell him to say it's a fantastic idea 😉

The card they always play on TV. Apparently, Rishi Sunak needs to listen to what the local election defeats are telling him about how the electorate feels on issues such as transgender activism and illegal immigration. Surely what the defeats are telling him is that stoking the class war Stella and chums want to break out isn’t something voters are turned on by? Not that they want more?

The only alternative they had was put up the money to stop him walking away with a good chance of the place shutting down. Gt. Yarmouth was on its knees in that period so at worst he could be discribed as an opportunist i suppose. I have little love for the bloke due to his political stance but just used him as a well known person to attempt to put something forward in my dislike for too many layers of government that neds to be paid for. The council paid £100,000 to bail him out because the business was failing. I think that (coupled with it being a council owned venue) gives them a degree of right to have a say in the use of it. As for a councillor being a postman? Much rather a postman in a position like that than career politicians.

Too wrongs will never be a right. Its not just because of someones previous job thats the issue as he easily could have been someone with a real vested interest in the decision. Please do not tell me these things never happen at council level or that councillors themselves have had their previous talents used in the best way for the voters. Know one personally who spent years in public transport, over 20, holding various positions from conducting up to lower management who was put on the parks and gardens commitee with zero interest and could not tell a daffodil from a daisy but still part of a decision making process.

Perhaps, though that's not in itself an issue for a variety of reasons. The flipside is, for example, is Jim Davidson going to be the best person to advise on what a council should do with its money, or what best suits Jim Davidson? That's not a criticism of him, but just making the point that his primary concern is about him, not about anything or anyone else. Your postie councillor, advised by people who are paid to understand and assess such things, will be making an informed decision based on a wide number of variables.
Does that mean they will always make the right or best decision? No. It definitely doesn't. But what's the alternative? It can't be to give national government the final say in such local decisions (you would barely get a decision made for starters, even if we had functioning government) and it surely can't be that people should be able to do whatever they want, whether that is with public money or by removing all regulations.
