3 days would give people time, to impose a cut off so quickly is ridiculous, even 3 days is tight but one day would be impossible for a lot of people. When the virus was out of control they were giving us weeks of advance notice, the govt is trying to appear decisive.

3 days would just mean everyone would rush home on Monday instead.
Anyone going on holiday knew there was a risk this might happen - it’s bloody irritating, but not a unforeseen surprise.

Anyone going abroad knew full well this might happen, if quarantine is the right thing to do it should be done instantly, delay will just worsen the situation, which, let's face it, means people dying unnecessarily.

Just seen the news with people racing across France to get home, massive queues at Dieppe and Calais, another effing shambles.

The virus is in every country so quarantine is pointless IMO, if people are quarantined coming from France then why not Oldham? The time for quarantine was March to slow the spread, I think the govt is trying to look strong after all the early dithering, they'll now defend themselves by saying they can't do right for doing wrong.

Portugal could be added again this week, people need much more certainty than this, why are we not testing people at airports and quarantining until the results are in, that way it's a couple of days and the cost could be added to the holiday, we're going to lose so many travel industry jobs at this rate.

Problem is you can't have certainty at the moment.
I work in travel, and we've been telling clients for the past few weeks that if you are unable to quarantine, you really shouldn't be traveling. We have a bit of a feel for what will happen (Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Turkey look OK for the next couple of weeks / Mauritius and bits of the Caribbean should be possible at Christmas) but can't know for sure. People do have a tendency to listen to the risks, agree to them, and then come back to complain when the worst occurs though.
All in all, it's just about survival for the industry at the moment. There's a big deadline at the end of September where various trading licences / bonds need to be renewed, and I fully expect we'll see lots of companies unable to survive that.
Airport testing is a possible solution, but not a cheap one, and the government has taken a view that other industries (eg hospitality) are more in need of the financial support.
The issue with quarantine is essentially that not everyone can be trusted to do it. Plenty of people will have come back from their houses in France / Spain this weekend and be sending their kids back to school tomorrow. No obvious solution to that though, as people are now fed up and ignoring the rules to a far greater extent than they were earlier on in the crisis (see the Stockport lockdown threads for obvious examples)

For reference, private testing works out at around £60 - £80pp. All well and good if you are going on an expensive trip, but prohibitive if you are (eg) just visiting family in Poland, and still potentially adding another £300 to the cost for a family heading on a cheap break to Spain. From an industry perspective, I agree it's absolutely what is needed for people to be safe / happy to travel. In terms of the relative risks in different places, a couple of charts. /photo/1 Also this link showing a breakdown by area.
Bear in mind that cases grow exponentially, hence the very large numbers in Spain / France compared to where they were a couple of weeks ago. This can't all be explained by testing more people either.

Scotland have announced quarantine measures on anyone returning from Greece. On the table above their numbers seem relatively low but I imagine the confirmed cases on board a flight back from Zante have made their mind up.
Like Vicar said earlier in the thread, it’s far too late to be doing it now. People will do as they please and I don’t think I’d be far off the truth in saying I bet around half the people that should quarantine don’t stick to it in the way they should.
I’ve zero intention of going on holiday this year, especially out of the country. From what I’ve seen it doesn’t look like an enjoyable or a relaxing situation to put yourself in. I’d rather take a week off work and unwind at home..

TBH one of the things that most gobsmacks me about this whole carry-on is the fact flights/holidays abroad continue to be sold, as in to and from anywhere. I mean, isn't that sort of what got us here, people jetting about and unknowingly carting deadly germs over borders? Now we know the risks attached to those choices! I do get that there are people who have family in other countries (including expat posters on here) and it would seem cruel/unconscionable to prevent that long-term...also that eventually, for all of us to be able to holiday abroad again seems a dream to cling on to. But...holidays in Portugal, now, just because we can, and it's sunnier there? Or people from Portugal coming here for that matter, to see the London sights. I mean, really? We've had/still have 'stay at home if you can'. Should we not also have 'holiday in your home country...if you can'? I might be missing something...but it just seems mad to me.

I'd like to think it's freedom of choice, personally I'll be lucky to get anywhere this year including this country as I can't afford to turn any work down after all this kicked off (self employed) but people should still be allowed the choice as to whether they go abroad or not but they have to accept the risks involved and don't moan if it goes tits up halfway through.

The horse bolted some time ago, if everyone on a flight has it then we have another 200 cases and we can deal with that by testing, the holday industry is vital to our recovery.

The weather is what you are missing I would say. If it was a Heatwave week in the UK I'd quite happily holiday in my own country, if it's a more typical UK week then I wouldn't particularly fancy going anywhere for more than a couple of days, while a week off spent at home seems a bit of a waste, especially this year considering the time spent WFH / Furlough / enforced Annual Leave. Agree I'll probably not have a choice this year though, and prepared to accept that.
