Utter farce that goal, but it was waiting to happen. Constant pass backs to Hinchliffe who’s kicking has been dreadful. Shouldn’t pass back at the goal either Quite simply, goalkeepers aren't footballers. He’s not being asked to dribble down the wing.... |

very tight / dull game between two decent sides cancelling each other out until Hinchliffe Stopforthed it again.
Ruskball doesn't seem that different from JGball so far - same problems we've seen before with a lone striker looking far too isolated, and some nice bits of play knocking the ball about in unthreatening areas.
Positives - Minihan/Crosdale/MSH are finding a bit of space down the right, and if we keep doing that, we'll get some more chances.
Jennings looks far better on the wing than falling over Rooney in the middle.
Negatives - Rooney is coming far too deep, far too often, and that's exacerbating Reid's isolation
passing it between the back four on the 18 yard line with a crappy pitch is asking for a dodgy bobble.

Sutton look extremely solid and well organised. Looking for a moment of brilliance I fear actually we have had a few half chances. we certainly should not be chasing the game. |

Hinchliffe’s kicking hasn’t been great but you aren’t going to cleanly hit every single back pass on a surface like this. Once he sliced the first couple they should’ve known to avoid knocking it back! Especially playing a daft bouncing ball like that!?
Started well, finished lacking a spark and seem a bit shocked after the goal. Get them fired up for the second half Rusk.

Surely any coaching manual tells you to not pass back directly at the goal for that very reason

Good advert for this level. Thought we started well and Rooney and Jennings both had sharp chances. They look decent and have made it difficult for us to create much around their box.
Even more obvious tonight that Rusk wants us playing out from the back and keeping possession. Worth remembering though that we aren't a premier league u23 side playing on a Premier league pitch. The Hinchliffe debacle was unbelievable and hes done that before, but it wasn't the first time that the tactic looked like it all might go pear shaped.
Let's see what Rusk is made of now with his half time chat. Think it's going to be difficult now. Would take a draw now.

We will need to do something special to score tonight. Sutton are no mugs defensively, they weren’t last season either. I thought this was going to be another 0-0, we’ll be lucky to get a point now. Before the goal we had created a couple of decent half chances, if we keep patient and don't lose our heads, there is a goal or two in this for us. Sutton have a very good defence, and now they have something to defend. Anyway... who wants a trip down memory lane? |
