Could see Whitfield potentially play as a central midfielder in our system has energy and intensity to press like Collar and Croasdale in there and also as left footer could balance things out nicely in there I'm sure Whitfield is right footed? Could be wrong. All i know is that he looked ordinary till he played on the left as he did for torquay and looked then the player we hoped he would be.

Interesting point about Whitfield and exactly where he'll fit in. He's a great player on his day and had started to really settle, but Rydel has done magnificently recently from being virtually non-existent under Rusk. Your guess is as good as mine, I suppose. All good problems to have from DC's point of view.
The potential Johnson signing sounds good, solid if unspectacular, which is fine by me. Our starting XI is pretty much settled now, but an upgrade on Fryers was always needed.

In the fans forum held shortly after DC’s arrival, in response to shape, DC claimed he favoured at 4-3-3. He may well have changed his mind by now, but this would better suit Whitfield and Crankshaw, with Jennings and Madden being able to play in it too. It does make the imminent arrival of Johnson a little harder to understand though, unless he feels that RJ can play in a back 4 too

I’d suggest 3412 is here to stay at the very least until the end of this season.

Hogan is out of contract in the summer so suspect he'll be gone, how long have we got Kitching, Keane and Palmer for? Barclay too actually, forgot about him. We must be looking at shipping at least one of those out (on top of Hogan).

Wiki also says; “He left Hartlepool at the end of the season, with the club stating they could not match the offer Johnson received at his new club.[41]” Thats totally true. DC wanted to keep him so must have thought he was good enough for div.2. Possibly seen more of him than most on here thanks to the live stream and i rated him. Not quite as good as kitching getting forward but was defensivly better. DC wanted to keep other players too such as Oates. He was also out of contract, but similar budget constraints meant they couldn’t retain him either and he was then signed up by Mansfield. I’m sure he’d have liked to keep Luke Armstrong too, but after his loan from Salford had finished, Harrogate stepped in. A familiar scenario we’ve had to suffer in the past! It’s good that DC now has another opportunity to have Johnson in his team, and at this stage of the season seems to be the perfect choice. Any other ex-Pools players being considered I wonder?

A squad role would still see him get more game time. Palmer is OOC is the summer and both Keane and Kitching have another year.

Maybe this will be the last we see of Palmer? If it is, promotion would be some way to bow out. I'd like to see him get at least another year. He might not be the long term ball playing defender to take us up through the leagues but there's nobody else at the club, or I've really seen facing us, who I'd rather have doing the bread and butter defensive tasks.

It's difficult because it's not like he's going to be retiring so we know a specific game will be his final one and we can make a big show and dance for him. It'd be a massive shame if it's just announced over the summer and then he's gone. Same with Keane, Minihan and Hinchliffe - especially Ben and Sam. They'll have done six seasons with us at the end of this one, without being dramatic we might never get that again from any player, certainly not ones who have been involved in such change from playing the likes of Tamworth, Alfreton, Gainsborough etc. If/when they go, they deserve proper send offs.

Think Palmer will be offered an extension to his contract for perhaps another 12 months, & will hopefully benefit from having someone with pace along side him (Challinor did comment a few times about Johnson being quick, when he was at Hartlepool). Still think that 2 seasoned CB's like Challinor & Clint Hill can make improvements to Barclay's game

Renewing Palmer, Hinchliffe, Keane and Minihan seems like a no brainer to me, not necessarily as starters although they can all do a job, at the next level, Palmer especially. Not just sentimentality, they can perform a role and not every single player needs to be a star.

Although when we run out next August on L2 opening day against Bolton*, led out by Ash and Ben, there’ll be a lump in my throat thinking back to them playing against North Ferriby, Guiseley and the like.
(*Probably be Harrogate or Barrow knowing our luck…)
