Powell could have easily made an appearance by now. He's clearly deliberately being held back for whatever reason. This for me is a massive shame. There was a Wigan fan on TSBW and you could hear the joy in his voice when he was recalling Powell's days in the championship at Wigan. Obviously this was when he was younger and in much better form but he's only 30 now. We've got 2 more years of him unless we give him an absolutely massive payoff. He made 36 appearances last season and was looking better in the second half of the season. Unless he's assaulted DC or done something else heinous I don't see why we're holding him back. He's still training with the team isn't he? Can we not just stick him on the bench or something, I think his creativity could be very usefull. Who’s he better than that is currently playing?

Agree, I can’t be told he couldn’t have had more of an effect on games that Collar and Fiorini have shown so far. As you say, only a few years ago he was the standout player at this level and he’s still within his prime years. Unfortunately seems like the ship has sailed but would love to be proven wrong. Collar was far superior to him last season when fit. We just spent 300k on Fiorini. Powell was ineffective as a 10 in L2 and had more of an impact deeper but he’s not getting in ahead of Bate, Camps or Norwood there.

Are we holding him back or the fact is there are better players available who have a future in the game and not a past. At best he only had the odd decent parts of games that were only remembered as the odd instance of a game he played in. The free kick at grimsby was about the best thing he did. Out of those 36 appearances how many were off the bench or starts he eventually got subbed off. I mean there's clearly way more competition for his place this season. But i'm surpised he hasn't been given at least a bit of a go. With Collar being out and it being a low pressure game I felt like Tuesday would have been a good game to either start him or give him a go from the bench. Wooton, Barry and Mellon being on the bench felt a little too striker heavy.

We no longer play a diamond where I think he looked best on the left side. That leaves CM where he's behind - on merit imo - Bate, Camps and Norwood and possibly Fiorini who played there vs Barnsley. At 10 he's never suited our system where we like energy to press and run beyond Wootton. Arguably we're moving away from that now or have another way of playing in Fiorini but he's still behind him and Collar. Camps can also play there. So I can see why he now doesn't make the 18 currently - though maybe he'll get a chance with Collar out. Whether he was kept out of the squad early as we were trying to move him on is another question. Maybe he could have played but we decided not to risk him; he's probably the sort of player who always has a niggle somewhere. I'll back him 100% on the pitch and hope he comes good but as it stands he is very poor value for money for us. You can't have a top earner not making the squad let alone starting. Last season was better as he clearly wasn't fit to begin with, improved and did have good games and contribute to the title. Maybe that was enough to make the signing worthwhile but even then he missed plenty of games and could only ever do 70 mins.

I don't know if he's "better" per se than anyone in the current starting lineup and I can completely see why DC is playing Fiorini as he's one for the future and needs to be played into form. But Powell is definately worth putting on the bench at least. Against Shewsbury i'd have had him on the bench over Mellon. I suppose DC sees Powell more as a holding midfielder instead of a 10 and the signing of Norwood has pushed him further down the pecking order. I'd just like to see him given some small opportunities to give him something to grab onto, he's too good a player to just rot in the BDSM trophy.

Come on FH - you know something about Powell. Not particularly. There have been rumours of a falling out but even without those (which may be rubbish) he's clearly persona non grata. In pre-season he was telling fans he was fully fit, and then according to the club he was injured, despite DC saying previously that Powell knows his own body better than anyone. He's made the bench for one league game this season and wasn't brought on, his two appearances have come in the Trophy. Added to that, it's been well-documented that he wasn't a Challinor signing. There was also a fair bit of talk about him being offered to clubs in the summer, and I was told by someone who's usually spot on about these things that he had talks with Crewe but couldn't come to an agreement on wages. I'd be very surprised if he played a league game for us again tbh. It was documented on here that those falling out rumours were completely made up so not sure why that’s been brought up again. You are just speculating, which is fine, but that’s all it is, I’d agree he’s not given us VFM but I still think we’ll see him this season.

I too think we will see him at some point and before January too. We will pick up injuries, the odd player will struggle for form and we will have a run of fixtures in a short period of time. Whether to move him on or keep him and get him contributing, Powell will need to play for both the club’s and his benefit.

DC has been very open about this, he’s mentioned Powell by name with others saying they are training well and he’s spoken to them and that they will be needed at some point and how difficult it is leaving them out. It’s the nature of social media that the mundane truth can’t be accepted and there has to be something more spicy in any situation.

I agree & I also think we'd actually see a better version of him in league 1 than league 2, the upgrade in the style of football in general in league 1, plus the fact we have a bit more pace to get onto some of his passes & players who could read him better I think would benefit him a lot.

We’ll be wanting to keep Burnley/Mellon happy by making sure he’s at the very least kept in the 18 when possible.
