I wonder how Gareth Southgate will be remembered in years to come. The man who turned around a massively underperforming team reaching 2 Euro finals, a World Cup semi final and a World Cup quarter final during his 8 years in charge or the man who failed to utilise the strengths of his better players playing them more often than not in an alien system in positions that do not get the best out of them. Honestly mixed feelings for me. The first manager I remember is Sven so we've been awful pretty much all my life and we've normally bar 2008 and 2014 got out of the group fine and then lost to the first top team we play. But this Southgate era has easily been the most enjoyable, but let's be honest the bar hasn't been high, so that's why I don't think labelling him the best England manager since 66 is much of a compliment. I also think he's had quite a lot of luck/good fortune, the first tournament, we came second but had an easier route than the winners of our group Belgium did, we played a decent team in Colombia and needed penalties to beat them, which made for a great night and was brilliant to win a shootout but my criticism of him is that he's not great tactically so winning a penalty shootout isn't done through tactics. His second tournament we played most of the games at home which is an advantage, other than that I can't criticise him, but I think his tactics in that game were an absolute crime and without doubt the reason we lost, and I think he should have left then. The following World Cup I actually think he did fine, and my opinion of him actually grew because we played well against France so I thought he's changed and learnt from the Euros final at Wembley so I didn't have a problem with him carrying on. Then this tournament despite getting to the final we've been pretty poor, I can't remember us playing well apart from the first half of the Holland game, but fair play to him for bringing Watkins on. Even the first game against Serbia we were lucky to hold on, and we could have easily gone out against Slovakia if it wasn't for a bit of magic from Bellingham. So I would say thanks for the memories, he has done a lot of good and given us some great moments but I think it's very clear he's not the man to win us a tournament in my opinion.

Right time for him to go, if he stayed on things would have gone very stale.
Be interesting to see what route the FA go down.
Potter is probably the most likely choice but wouldn’t be surprised to see them go down the youth route and give it to Carsley.
I think we’d be mental to not approach Klopp to test the waters. Have a sneaky feeling he might be interested too.

A good decision by Southgate. Let’s hope we aren’t looking back on his era as a golden one but rather as having laid the foundations for what came next.
Can’t believe the media are talking about Lampard and Gerrard as candidates. Lee Carsley is being mentioned as a potential, but not sure that the FA would be willing to take the flack they would undoubtedly get for such a low profile appointment. Still think they’ll plump for Potter.

Klopp’s philosophy is fairly straightforward and far less intricate than for example Pep’s (and arguably Potter’s). Agree that is highly unlikely to happen though.

Southgate leaving is like coming out of a communist regime.
Some people liked it but most want a progressive society to enjoy.

Worth considering that Klopp knows exactly what the press are like over here as well, so with his alleged health issues you'd imagine he'd want to give this a swerve.

Frank Lampard. I think he would fit the FA "criteria"

They said they don't intend to ever appoint a foreign manager again, so not Klopp. I think England will find what Wales found over the last few weeks - restricting yourself to home grown ends up with an uninspiring appointment.

Definitely feels like the right time.
He’s done a stellar job reigniting the country’s interest and belief in the national team and I, personally, have some great England memories now, thanks to him.
To be regularly competing in the latter stages might be the minimum we should expect, but we haven’t done it for years, so he’s done fantastically to get us to that stage and it’s such a shame we couldn’t get over the line.
Gets a huge thanks from me. Very interested to see who we bring in next.
Anyone but Lampard. I beg you.

Its the right time but GS deserves credit for what he has done with the National team. He'll have his critics and perhaps some of it is justified but overall he's done a good job and left us in a better shape than when he started.
