“I hate that first question,” said Ryan Latham from the Bolton podcast Trotter Chatter when I first spoke to him. “Toughsheet,” I replied. (I didn’t really, as I’ve just thought of that now, but it’s still quite funny innit?”) The Trotters ended up more battered than a sausage at The Friary the last time they visited SK3 but they’re very much on the up at the moment. In fact, we both are: between us we’ve won 22 of our last 23 games. A 0-0 snoozefest tomorrow night then… thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/are-bolton-still-getting-battered

The Football League Trophy has been sponsored by paint and pizza in recent years, but we’re back in familiar territory tonight with a vehicle-related company taking over the reins. If my geek-o-meter is working correctly, our last game in the competition when sponsored by a vehicle-related company was a 3-0 defeat at Chester City in the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy on Halloween in 2006. That was a night to forget, but we’ve not done too badly in previous transport-themed incarnations of the competition, with a couple of Wembley finals under the Autoglass banner and a northern final in the Auto Windscreens. Let’s see how far we can go in the inaugural Bristol Street Motors Trophy. We’ve already qualified for the next round, and we’re guaranteed a home draw if we beat Bolton this evening, which Ian Brown is backing us to do. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/county-v-bolton

This feels a little strange, talking about a County defeat for the first time since August. Although I don’t think we’re that arsed are we, least of all Dave Challinor who made 11 changes last night with the Hatters already through. It does mean we’ll be away from home in the next round, which could be a festive jaunt to Blackpool, a first ever trip to Pride Park, or even another date with our friends from North Wales. Dave Philbin and Luke Watson take a look back at last night for us, as the Trotters top Group E. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/county-0-bolton-2

We’ve already racked up a fair few miles with our new ‘Meet the Subscribers’ series, with trips to Essex and Kent, but we’re leaving the UK for the first time today as Graham Hall joins us from Spain. You might not recognise the name, but if you bought The Tea Party during the 90s you’ll have read Graham’s work before, as the man behind regular feature Calliope’s Column. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/calliopes-column

“Probably the least appealing fixture of the season,” said Ben Walker yesterday. Even with the likes of Harrogate and Crawley in League Two, I’d be inclined to agree with County’s shirt supremo. Whenever I sit down to write anything about Colchester, nothing gets my creative juices flowing. I don’t hold any ill feeling towards the Essex club, it’s just that nothing overly exciting has ever happened against them in my lifetime. From the age of 5 to 17, we didn’t play them at all, so I don’t have any childhood Colchester memories. And until last season, we’d only occupied the same division on five occasions during my adult years, with a record of zero wins, two draws and eight defeats. Layer Road was a shithole, and I haven’t been to their new place. History was made last season, however, as County’s first victory back in the Football League was against Colchester, with further headlines to be written this afternoon if Dave Challinor’s men can pick up another three points, which would equal Luton’s record of 12 consecutive victories in League Two. Jonathan Baker, Ian Brown, Andrew Barlow and even today’s Colchester representative Callum all think history will indeed be made by 5pm. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/county-v-colchester

That’s a great story, off to Japan next April but doing the different islands on a cruise ship otherwise would have loved to do some of those places.

Technically, the first ever subscriber to hit the subscribe button was Bask supremo Benji Taylor. But when you create your own Substack, you automatically become the very first subscriber, so I thought I’d interview myself today. Talking to yourself is the first sign of going mad isn’t it? Ah well. I’m a County fan, that ship sailed a long time ago. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/the-first-ever-subscriber

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. And when the Football League puts together a daft draw for the next round of the Pizza Car Cup (there’s really no need for it to be live on Sky Sports News and there’s absolutely no need for the teams to be split into eight different pots), write a daft article making out that tonight’s draw is a lot more important than it actually is. There’s some interesting options in there to be fair. I don’t think many of us want Accrington, as we only played there eight weeks ago, but another chapter in our recent rivalry with Wrexham could be fun, and it’s two decades since we’ve enjoyed the delights of Blackpool or Wigan. The round of 32 in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy really isn’t something to get too excited about, but I’ve enjoyed having a catch-up with Jane Stuart, Martin Tarbuck and Tim Edwards. We’ll know whether we’re off to Lancashire or North Wales later today. thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/your-cut-out-and-keep-guide-to-tonights

Well, it had to happen at some point, and we have to cover it I suppose. Ed Bridges (from the Newport podcast 1912 Exiles) and Dan Levy take a look at Saturday’s game for us today, as County’s 12-game winning run in League Two comes to an end. We’re still five points clear at the top, though. We’ve been in worse positions over the last few years… thescarfmyfatherwore.substack.com/p/newport-2-county-1
