I know about Rooney. I wasn't saying he wasn't difficult. Just with Jim there's a lot of stories out there too. I wasn't speaking for the poster but it really isn't hard going to hear stories about him. It’s not, but most are ‘he’s difficult’, ‘he’s a bad man manager’ without giving specific examples or backing it up with anything. Best we’ve had so far is he looked at someone a bit funny 25-30 years ago. He happened to be at a party my wife was at (she's friends with another ex players daughter), while I was on my stag do in York. He rang me (I was wasted so didn't answer) and left a good 5 minute long voicemail, congratulating me, and telling me to be careful, also asking if I could play left wing. We also saw him the weekend of the Halifax game after he'd done that gig at notion. We hadn't been but he was walking through the market place and I said hi. Again, he stopped and talked to us for a good 10/15 mins about County, life, about whether he would be at the game etc. This was after he'd probably been talked to death for the previous 3 hours. For every bad story someone could give you, you'll hear another 10 good ones. He's a decent, decent man and deserves respect from anyone who ever watched one of his County teams.

How do we know John Rooney was difficult to work with? I've heard some stories about Jim, I love the man but not only second hand stories but his track record at clubs like Port Vale etc. He's my favourite County manager but there's a reason a man of his knowledge and expertise is not managing anymore. Because the club he loves, and loves to manage, keep f*cking sacking him? Makes me wonder what peeps would say about Gaurdiola, Ferguson, Wenger, Klopp , Mourinho, Clough (senior) and a whole host of successful managers in f they think JG was difficult.

Mate works at a restaurant in Manchester. Guardiola is a total tw*t apparently. Which is possibly the least surprising news of the evening.

Just watched that whole interview back. Forget the Rooney incident, just listen to how he talks, his philosophy, how much he cares about the club, trying to give us an identity not just on the pitch but as a club, and as individuals. There’s not a word there you can disagree with, unless you’ve got some weird vendetta (👋 gibbo). It’s insightful, it’s honest, it’s from the heart and it’s everything that made us County. And we f*cked it off. We chose Rusk over that. We chose to throw it all away and put out some bullshit statement using culture against him. 1000 games, 30 years, unparalleled success as a player and manager. It was disgraceful then and it’s even worse now. Absolutely spot on. JG always recruited for attitude, approach and character as much as ability. And it comes as absolutely no surprise to me that he would have preferred to have Rooney nowhere near the Club. When his signing was announced I commented that with 10 clubs in 10 years, and also knowing a bit about his track record, he was never, in this world or the next, a JG signing. I'm also convinced that the interview at Hartlepool saw the die being cast. It was only the upcoming West Ham game that postponed what was the inevitable JG is a County legend regardless of any personal views of his temperament, attitude etc. His time has been and gone now. We all need to move on.

I've never comprehended the disconnect people have with what goes on in the football club they support with what goes on in the work places they know.
Some who've played for Jim Gannon didn't like him or his management style, of course they don't, every boss in the land has people grumbling about them, that's just how it goes.

I don’t know him well, have had a few dealings with him over the past five years or so but he’s always been exactly as you describe. It’s no secret I got his Romania shirt off him in 2020. That came about because he contacted me on Twitter (he contacted me), congratulated me on my collection and asked if I’d be interested in his shirt as it belonged in the collection, recognised what I was doing to preserve and share the history of the club etc. He knew what that shirt was and how much it would mean to me to own it. We exchanged a few messages and he agreed to call me. He did, exactly at the time he promised he would. I was expecting a quick 5-10 mins, agree a price and that would be that. We spoke for over an hour, he asked loads of questions about the collection, about me, took a genuine interest and he shared stories about him and his experiences. We agreed a price and I’d bob down to EP to get it off him that weekend. I arrived ten mins before the agreed time, he was already waiting for me. Again, I thought I’d be there 30 mins and that would be that. I was there nearly five hours with him. On a Saturday morning when we had no game. He gave up five hours of his time to show me around the ground, his office, the lounges, the old museum and talk through in great detail about all the memories he had about County. All the old shirts he’d given to the club to be displayed in the lounges, the old programmes and the games that meant something to him. He bought his own little collection of County shirts with him as he knew I’d be interested to look at them. He didn’t have to do any of that. But he did. I got five hours chatting to Jim about anything and everything to do with County because he recognised what it meant to me. And after all that, none of which he had to do, the money I gave him for the Romania shirt, which was by far and away the most I’ve ever paid for a shirt, probably the most I will ever pay, more than double the next most expensive, he gave it all away to three different charities who needed it more than him. When I see comments about him being a poor man manager, or being difficult, that’s why I stick up for him. I always will. He’s the absolute epitome of everything good I associate with County. The heart, the soul and depth that I mentioned earlier, Jim embodied more than anybody else ever will. You can’t buy it, you can’t manufacture it. It takes years and years of love, emotions and experiences for it to occur. And once again, we threw it away and used the word culture against him. Going to stop posting tonight as I’ll only end up getting even more wound up.

I agree but the issue is that owners and directors don't seem to like Jim or his management sadly. Whether that is for the right reasons or not. Jim is the best tactician I've never seen at County. His principles of play were superb. But I probably would be at odds with his public criticism of players, I would always be of the keep in house method. Defend them in public and rip into them in private. But it's horses for courses.

I am not a big fan of it Myself but it is hardly limited to JG or even a small subset of managers.

I tweeted him a couple of years ago about any advice he could give my lad, a centre back, for a cup final? He replied with a lovely direct message and even followed it up later to ask he got on (his team lost on penalties, my lad had his saved which sealed it) and he was just so nice. As was Ash Palmer!
