In 10 years living in Scotland I never met a single Rangers fan with the slightest interest in County

A foreign King and his army landed in Britain, does there need to be a battle for it to be an 'invasion'? Semantics?....supported by a significant portion of the population and those in power....he was greeted as a hero throughout the North of England including in Stockport where one of the very first Orange Lodges was founded in his honour....and supported by the methodist faith, the Orange Order being a temperance movement amongst other things (just to burst that other bubble!)..... [br Was D Day not an invasion then ?

Also those asserting that Methodists have nothing to do with loyalism should really tell themselves off for being a bit silly... As should those claiming that people are sectarian just because they're from Belfast, suggesting that Rangers fans are bigots and ignoring the fact that Stockport County's support has included a large contingent of Rangers fans since the late 60's at least...obvious really with workers from all over adopting us as their local club... Given the centuries-long tradition of Catholicism in the North of England coupled with near two centuries of immigration to the area by Irish Catholics it could be just as obvious that there is a large contingent of County fans with support and sympathies towards Celtic. And people could be just as likely to see us as club with strong Celtic links. But we don't and they don't. Strange really.

So if there's been foreign troops in Brixham opposing the foreign landings it would have been an invasion, but there weren't so it wasn't?

Correct me if I’m wrong but “The Scarf” was never heard at County in the 90s. I went home and away during that decade and never heard it until years later. Was it around back in the day and then took a long break? IIRC the scarf re-appeared in 96/7, was certainly around in the late 90s I guessed the 60's. I was only going to game in the 90's and heard it then. Surprises me it's that late though.

There is a strong historical connection I assume dating back to fact the club was founded by Protestants. I've no idea when the Sash / Scarf was first sung. 60's? There are a couple of flags from Belfast you see at games which show loyalist connections. I suspect the links in 2021 are somewhat minimal but you only have to remember how often "When I was young" was sung in the 90's by a certain section.. Weirdly I do follow Rangers as my second team. I think a few do. Not sure if that is some subconscious thing because I couldn't give less of a sh*t about the religious connotations if I tried. Someone who emigrates from Ireland to Stockport in the 1930's-1970's isn't particularly going to know about events that happened 100 years early with the Irish riots of the 1850's or stuff that happened in the 17th century. They may just choose to watch their local team play football, or if not them their children. They may not even particularly have any interest in sectarianism or paramilitaralism. If they felt unable or uncomfortable being Irish, Catholic, and republican whilst at County that only reflects badly on those whose attitude or actions make them feel that way. Several waves of immigration over several years, creating several generations of those with Irish and Catholic roots. No reason why a sizeable number should not support County, and why a sizeable number of those shouldn't also be Celtic fans.

IIRC the scarf re-appeared in 96/7, was certainly around in the late 90s I think you’re right about late 90s. I dont think it was the glory year though. I think it might have been around in the glory year. I think it was the West Ham replay where the Express said they were going to print the words to the Scarf so that we could all, ahem, "sing along". After they trailed it the week before, someone at the paper pointed out the origins of the song, and they got very cold feet. So what actually appeared in the paper was a load of Christmas carols, with amended "County" words. They had apparently been written in a panic by staff in the Wood Steet office, and were hilariously shit.

My first memories of mass Scarf singing are at places like Birmingham and Sunderland.
