Torquay were the better team for me. Don't think we've got value for money with our recruitment, those are the games we should be dictating but once again we look short in certain areas. we looked short /equal in some areas today... we defo missed Madden Whatever division we are in next Season we will see some big signings if this season is anything to go buy cant fault the endevor but you can see why some players have been around the non league curcuit for most of their careers The playoffs are a lottery we all know that... a badly timed tackle, injury ,a dodgy ref can scupper a seasons work but we are in it

What was the plan when subbing off a striker for a CDM/CB? Securing the point. Rusk is a percentages guy. We are now in 3rd with 2 to go and 4th place have to go to Champions-elect next Sunday. With our far superior goal difference we win against Woking and Hartlepool lose to Sutton and everything is secure for 3rd. He's pulled strikers for CDMs before when scores have been level in games where a win would be expected (especially during that initial run). Today felt like another one, although I accept that I didn't realise earlier on that a point was good enough; in my head at that point, bringing Keane on for Reid didn't make sense but it does in hindsight. Still though, Rusk does sometimes make an odd sub.

Keane’s intervention saved a certain goal in the dying moments but without Madden we lacked that bit of quality up front today to win the game without our Paddy. Hope Simon saw that and will put it right next season. Woking and Yeovil too winnable games to get us in the right frame for the playoffs.
I agree with 3330, what ever division we are in next season we will see some big signings coming in. However if we are still in tier 5 next season. Stott has to look at how we lost the chance of promotion and the sacking of JG has played in our failure to get to the EFL

Still though, Rusk does sometimes make an odd sub. He more often than not makes a change of system instead of a straight change of personnel. Early on under his tenure it just looked flat, but since then you can see the intention is to change the style of play, get the extra man in midfield etc. I don't mind it so much.

Had 2 or 3 neutrals comment to me all saying the game, very good entertaining game. People saying we didn't have control in midfield, did Torquay? Newby picked up the ball in the half space plenty of times himself. It was two teams wanting to win a football match and a draw was a fair result. Agree with that, and most comments on todays game. In the grander scheme of things though, based on our resources / outlay this season, I would have expected a bit better from us against the better teams. Both Gannon and Rusk don't really seem to have been able to get us over that hump. Spot on gibbo & that's why i found today to be frustrating rather than enjoyable. Hopefully we're lulling the other top teams into a false sense of security & saving our ability to give a couple of them a whupping until the play-offs!

Jim was a great manager but Jim had to have a few goes to get us up from the NLN. If we miss out on the playoffs at least Rusk will have a full season to see what he is capable of, so far he seems very good.

Just realised, this is (hopefully) the last ever "Match Thread" of it's type. I'll be in Our Ladies next Saturday, unless ballot successful, then probably the same for any Play Off games. So won't be following the board in the same way. I agree with Suedehead though, I've loved these threads through the games we've not been able to go to, so if it's the last one its been fun.....

Seen criticism of Croasdale now. He did make an error with the penalty but the way we play gives him and us no chance of getting match control. Every team has had at least longish good spells against us at home (some have 15 minute long solid control ) and today was no different. Torquay were more powerful, fairly direct and cut huge gaps through the middle. Whoever we play in play offs will create huge problems for us BUT the play offs are cautious and cagey and that just may work in our favour. Agreed Madden will be a miss. I wouldn’t write us off but feel we are not favourites. Torquay big favourites on that performance I would be happier if Sutton blew it and Torquay were champions and consequently Sutton 2 Hartlepool 3 County 4 just to avoid them.

Still think we missed a trick not starting Bennett, with Madden out. Reid had a few comments about not holding it up, which Madden does do. But it’s never been a strength of Reid’s and Bennett is better at it than Cardwell.

Yep, you're right. The threads will obviously continue for each game but imagine contributions will be down from those at the game. Suspect we'll still be hitting 15/20 pages each game which is good going. Remember Eastleigh away? I think that hit 60 pages!

Had to work during the game today but was overall pretty pleased with the performance.
Two things that stick out like a sore thumb at the moment.
1. Caldwell isn't a good enough upgrade for Bennett.
I don't understand why Bennett can't get a game ahead of Cardwell.
Cardwell's had a few good game and can look decent but Bennett has been the most in form in terms of scoring goals whilst out on loan. I'm also unsure why Rusk doesn't seem to like or trust Reid.
Always seems to get hooked. But in short, I'd have Cardwell on the bench and Reid or Bennett in the number nine.
2. We were far too open today without Collar or Maynard on the pitch.
We conceded so many chances and looks so exposed in the second half especially. The game got stretched and it worked against us.
Said it before and saying it again, as much as I like Croasdale (definitely a pen btw) having him in that same midfield as Rooney makes us very pedestrian and probably pushes Rooney into the number 10 - where he's less effective.
Croasdale is probably a natural replacement for Rooney, but could be useful as a sub when closing down a game in the latter stages.
Best three man midfield for me is probably Collar, Rooney and either Newby or Walker.
Looks like 3rd will be out best finish and I hope we finish there - 4th place could see us ending up playing both Torquay and Hartlepool and frankly, I don't want to play either!
And just to add, loved the new scoreboard, not sure on the "COUNTY" on the seats. Looks a bit too big for such a small stand. Perhaps it'll grow on me though..

But I agree 3rd on PPG when Jim was sacked and that's where we are now, not Simon's fault so let's get behind him.

Just to add, it was a great game between two very good sides.

Been a good debate on here with BW, Phil, M20, Nik, Atmosphere, Suedehead, Lee that come to mind...and sure a few more.....be good to put a face to all those names....
