Might be because every human being's programmed to be competitive to varying degrees but anything we're competing for a gold medal in seems to all of a sudden interest me when it never would outside the Olympics. I'll watch hardly any of these sports when the Olympics finished. A client invited me to the cycling WC a few years back and I sort of gurned and said "no thanks". It defies logic (for me). I’m going to campaign for a new 4th place medal in the games, from this first week it seems we’d have won quite a few. "Iron"

A sport you hate to love ? What about Rowing, not really a sport for the masses but possibly some of the most watchable and exciting sports in the Olympics. Question to ask yourselves is would you watch any of these olympic sports if they were going on at a local level a walking distance from your home if you did not know anyone who was competing. None would be my answer even the popular ones.

But it does help that there's a good bar and they give free butties at half time to be fair.

No, but most who are interested will watch some form of football be it on TV at home, down the pub, at a ground somewhere. Which is completely different to say archery, or canoe slalom, or BMX Track cycling, or sailing, etc... All of which I've watched at the Olympics, but wouldn't know where to start watching them outside the Olympics / locally; and/or have never/would never watch aside the Olympics. Compared to sports like Football, Athletics, cycling, tennis, etc.. Which I have and do.

Just tuned into the boxing on Sky tonight.. its at Barnsleys ground for a local boxer, but weirdly, the ring is set out on the equivalent of the penalty area infront of their Cheadle End, with all the other stands empty. There's probably a few sat around the ring on the pitch, but it does look a bit of an odd set up for a 'stadium fight'.

If you know sod all about that sport it must be difficult for a viewer to think who is the best. Its not like a race, a target or a score that decides a winner. Possibly a lot is down to a persons interest in sport in general which will range from watching any down to watching none with many like me its football with a bit of cricket and RL but nothing much else.

I think if you watch only a little bit and listen to the commentators and take a note of what scores are given that it's fairly easy to have a reasonably decent appreciation of what is considered good, well executed, worthy of a high score. Your estimation or idea won't be perfect no, but you can get a reasonable idea what they're looking for in the gymnastics, skateboarding, horsey dancing, etc...

Well the commentators certainly knew GB wouldn’t have a chance if India held on for penalties in the hockey…

Breathtaking finish from Femke Bol yesterday to bring the gold home for the Dutch mixed relay team.
Added context, at last year's World Championships she was holding off US pressure down the back straight and somehow fell just before the finish line.
For more context, the USA had set a world record in the semi-final on Friday.

If we're talking about sports that should or shouldn't be in the Olympics, maybe 2 people belting each other in the head is one that shouldn't? Can't say that I'm comfortable with shooting and archery either. Just seems wrong to be rewarding people for how well they handle what is really a weapon.

Technically its just a spear. Personally have no issue with archery, shooting as a sport. There is a lot of discipline in performing to a high standard-just look at the control of the shooting competitors. I did some archery at university. The club always had strictly controlled shooting sessions. Yes, in the wrong hands they could be used as a weapon but I don't see that the competitors see it that way.
