Windies v Eng starting shortly
Ashes completely wiped from my mind. Selectors gone for a relatively young squad, always need to think about the future but I'm not sold on dropping Broad/Anderson for Overton & Woakes... especially given the latter's famous struggle to perform outside England

This England team needs to concentrate on here and now and winning some games. It's not like they are on the decline yet either. Whilst they won't be here forever, they are arguably improving with age. Take both of them, play 1 each Test as the experienced option if you want to have half an eye on development.

Slow wicket means you have to earn your runs. Push and prod. Our batters aren’t capable of that. I bet the Windies apply themselves better.

Well done Johnny Bairstow. Put is in with a shout. We need more from the top order to be a proper test team though.

Well done Johnny Bairstow. Put is in with a shout. We need more from the top order to be a proper test team though. England has not had a good opening batsman since Alistair Cook retired. Even he started to decline after 2010/2011 season. I suggest his decline was the result of the big bash cricket and England players in general have not really been able to shine at both levels. BB cricket is not the cricket that I witnessed as a boy; with Lennard Hutton and Cyril Washbrook opening, followed by Denis Compton and Bill Edrich at 3 & 4. It will be surprising if England's test team ever get back to the level of those days whilst the BB cricket is still a part of the picture.

If the most brilliant minds in the land has been recruited for the task of destroying English cricket they’d have struggled to do as good a job as those running the ECB over the last decade or so

Possibly the amount of big bash played and the importance put on it is the bigger problem. Might not be proper cricket to the purists but it certainly pays the bills more. Think without BB and extra sponsorship cricket would die with 5 day tests and the old 3 day county championship format. We may not like it but times have changed but cricket at least have attempted to go with the times. Its just england have seemed to suffer the worst or just going through a lean period as all international sides have gone through.
