Sorry our opinions differ . Sometimes you have to accept people have different ones to yours. I don't think giving a 33 year old a 3 year contract is the correct one . I guess we will know for sure in 2027. As for Powell I think he has been a massive disappointment personally and if you think he played 30 full games you are very much mistaken . He's spent more time out injured than playing . He came with a footballing reputation and also for a reputation for being out injured. He's certainly proved the second point . And he wont play 30 games this season either You're entitled to your opinion and it's got some valid basis but saying he was out injured for longer than he was available last season is just factually wrong. As above, he played in 32 of our 46 league games. Joint 9th in the squad. 3 fewer than Pye for example. His minutes are down in 14th though as 11 sub apps in there and when started I'm not sure if he ever lasted a full 90. 3 goals and 0 assists in 32 appearances for a player of that quality stepping down to League 2 was a disappointing return in my opinion. I liked how he looked when he played but wasn’t impressed with the end product. Hopefully he can improve on that this season.

I’m happy to hear anyone’s opinion on any of our players and Powell has come in for some deserved and some undeserved criticism. I also think our original poster has had an agenda against Powell regardless of performances and first post in response to the singing or Norwood suggests the same. Let him have a chance before passing judgement, majority of our rivals seem rather jealous of the coup so let’s see that as a good sign.

If Norwood contributes to another promotion this season, the 3 year deal will already have been worth it

Only missed 3 of the final 30 games of the season too; after he got over the poor start with injuries, he was almost always available to play. Problem was he was only good for 60-70 mins when he did start. Was it a problem? As Challinor himself says, squads have starters and finishers. We have enough subs available to be made in a match to change half of the outfield line-up, why not utilise them so we get the best 60-70 minutes we can out of a player and then replace them?

We knew that he was injury prone but he looked far too good for us. Let me explain if you're playing with lesser players then they don't read your balls or moves so you look ineffective. Who else would have Powell? So we've got a player who's well within his rights to see out his contract for another 2 years. With Powell where would you play him instead of who? No for consistency I felt EXACTLY the same way when Paddy signed. I described Paddy as the most underwhelming big signing we had up to that point under stott and I was proved wrong. The other point is we have enough midfielders dc loves them. This might be like camps who was a signing too far in his first season trying to force him into the team didn't work. This combined with 3 years for a 33 year old and we let sarc go means I'm underwhelmed. But I might be proved wrong, not this year but I imagine by year 3 Norwood will be nowhere near the level.

But playing deeper, as he did in the second half of the season, means he was less likely to rack up assist numbers. His passing contributed to goslscoring moves, whether it was the final pass to the goalscorer or not.

Did Powell drop too far? good players adapt at any level, not sure he ever looked too good for us thats an insult to the players that remain, unfortunately there is a lot more than talent alone that makes a footballer, and I dont see the heart or desire from Powell that goes with his talent, he goes down so far as more miss than hit for me, I really dont buy this he plays balls others dont see, you really telling me Barry, Olaofe and Madden don't have the ability or intelligence to be where he puts the ball 2 got 20+ goals last year and Barry would have bar injury, is that cos all our other players are a bit shitter to be able to create for them? Powell made his name in L2 and managed fine then id imagine the fire burned brighter in his belly back then out to make a name for himself and he's perhaps slipped into a bit of comfort zone or lost a little bit of love for game which can happen when requires lots of dedication to be a pro footballer, he kind of admitted that himself that his application could have been better and Sarce who he good mates with has suggested he doesnt actually think he likes football that much Im afraid all we've seen from Powell is flashes and his figures kind back that up, teams have players delivering consistent product as a unit, Powell has contributed at times to that but for marquee player and 3 years his profile wasnt right to break the bank for me, im not entirely comfortable with Norwood length of deal but he seems a different type of character more in love with doing whats required to maximise the most of his talent and what it takes to remain high level for sustained periods It would be great business if we could move him on IMO not sure we want both him and Norwood on top whack and not sure Powell really fits the ethos, is he a bad player far from it but was a signing I didnt like from day one tbh, he still has time to prove me wrong if he gets a chance and I hope he does, not sure he will though

That doesn’t account for things like his 50 yard pass to Lemon at Grimsby, which led to Tanto scoring, or his outside of the boot pass to Hippo against Accrington, which led to Wootts scoring. A wise man on here once called it the assist assist (yes, looking at you Matbot). Stats don’t always = full picture.

If you’re playing our current structure (I hesitate to say formation, given it changes multiple times a game) then Powell isn’t going to be the lung busting Collar role, breaking beyond the front three and pressing high up. No reason why he couldn’t be one of the deeper lying pivots, but he’s now got Bate, Camps and Norwood ahead of him in the pecking order there, so his opportunities look limited.
Personally I still think there’s something amiss with him and wouldn’t be surprised if he left before the end of the window, but if he does stay I’m intrigued to see where he ends up playing.

Powell is quality. I thought he was awesome last season and I really hope he stays and has a huge part to play again this season. I don't get all the negativity against him.
